was looking forward to see the animation of Route Gadget on a iPad, but unfortunately, discovered that the iPad does not come loaded with a Java VM. Too bad. Seemed the perfect device to show off among friends in a bar about how cool running in the woods looking for flags is...

iPad will never have Java - so don't be holding out for it...

(best bet for showing off to friends is to take a video of the system running on a pc/mac and then upload that to your ipad).

RG is great, but it's pretty wonky. Wouldn't a YouTube video of people running in the woods looking for flags be at least as cool as RouteGadget? The iPad plays YouTube videos great...

I have a great video to show.... oh wait, it's fake and unrealistic. Never mind. ;-)

I was thinking about this... Imagine if you could get some people in a bar vaguely interested and understanding whats going on with routegadget, or live GPS or something up on a big screen. I think people would have great fun with it, especially if someone from the area or country was doing particularly well (that always seems to help interest!)

On the showing videos to my friends. I've tried that, but it didnt work that amazingly. It apparently doesn't look that exciting to non-orienteers. A lot of the videos out there leave a lot to be desired but there are some good ones.

Recently (yesterday), I took a quick look at the WOC 2008 videos from CZ, and I must say it looked very professional and neat, with multiple camera viewpoints, course/map overlay over an aerial photo (for the sprint) and route choices comparison (there was no GPS though, but for a sprint I guess it less important). I thought with so much materials, they could do a replay which would appeal to both orienteers and non-orienteers.
