Hi attackpointers,

I am wondering if there is someone out there who is coming for all or most of the 1000-day races in Wyoming/Colorado this August who'd be willing to adopt myself and Kat, in particular helping with transport to and from the races in Wyoming and making the drive over to Colorado. Such help would be really appreciated, and we'd of course share in the gas money and so on. Please email me if you think this is possible.
Thanks!

I'm just making 1000 day plans now. Looks like my mom and I will have a car and a few extra spaces. Might suit your needs...Sent you an email through your profile.

Charlie:
Not sure about other times, as Rhonda will be with me for the first part, but she will leave on Monday the 14th. After that I could provided transportation, including the ride to CO.

Boris, you will most likely find lots of willing folks to drive you and Kat to the meet sites, unless you are staying in the boondocks. :) Add me to your list of possibles - meet days August 14+, plenty of room to Colorado...

We could strap you both to the roof of our car :)

In fact, Sam and Hill and Ross might need some transport or luggage help getting from WY to CO

I like how all these people can get to Denmark a-okay, but then need to hitch a ride to a neighboring state. ;-)

I would not take Samatha's offer. If nothing better comes up - let me know and I could lend my mountain bikes....

Well I am driving by myself and going to the whole thing, so could potentially offer a ride. The only hick, you'll need to get to Kelowna first.
Ah how helpful that was.

I'll be on my own in WY from the first Wed to Sun and can help during that time. I go back to Dallas after that and then Lisa and I come back out on Fri for the CO races.

ok, so it's true. I actually need someone else to stap my luggage to the top of their car. :)

I also have a request: Not having been to the Yellow Pine Campground, but taking in the advice of the inimitable Swampfox, if some are arriving at Yellow Pine early, could they set aside a small portion of their campsite for my small and discreet tent? I will be arriving via mountain bike (no car), and besides having a small ecological footprint, confidently promise inherant quiet helped along by profound exhaustion...you probably won't even know I'm there... and if the bears don't hear my bells on the way in, I may end up not being there at all:)

Looks like I'll be in Wyoming with my car, and at the moment I have no passengers, though I'll have a bunch of stuff in the car (I'm sure I could squeeze in your luggage, Sam). I'm staying at a motel in Laramie (haven't yet determined which one). I think I'll have one passenger in the car starting from when we leave for Buena Vista.

I could also offer a ride from/to the northeast, if anyone wants to share driving, although there are some interesting schedule quirks. Contact me off-list if you want more details.

Yellow Pine... is that Happy Jack? Haven't been there in years, maybe we have moved location?
Jul 14, 2006 5:33 PM #
jjcote:
Yellow Pine is just down the road from Happy Jack. It's the one where you drive in over about a mile of badly washboarded road, and wind up on a hilltop a couple of hundred meters from the paved road.
Jul 14, 2006 7:37 PM #
Barbie:
I see... does that mean that people don't camp at Happy Jack anymore or is it just an alternative?

Well Marcus,
it really all depends how old you are and how good you look. Rides can always be arranged with the right answers - whahahahahahahahaha.

I am mountain biking from boulder to laramie, Marcus. we could ride together if you want? Not that I'm scared of being et by bars or caught in high mountain snowstorms or anything. Rent for the bike from Boulder Bikesmith is about $150 for 9 days but it comes with free gas.

Is anyone departing Laramie soon after the Night O Champs (Monday August 14) on a route that passes anywhere near Cincinnati?

faithfl: The first two times I read that my brain saw "hit by cars" instead of "et by bars". I knocked on wood.
Jul 26, 2006 4:01 AM #
Swampfox:
Any route which departs Laramie and doesn't swing through Buena Vista is a bad one!
Jul 26, 2006 4:20 AM #
cedarcreek:
I'm sure you're right about that.

I actually drove through Buena Vista about 10 years ago. I was driving between Salida and Leadville on a little vacation. I had a weird night's sleep in Leadville, elevation 10400 feet (3170m), then went to the mining museum, which had exhibits of all these amazing and beautiful minerals. I know that sounds weird, but it's true. I'd go back. After the museum, I drove around Leadville looking for superfund sites. I photographed this really nasty looking holding pond, but (and remember this was *way* before 9-11) I decided it might not be safe to hop out of a rental car and take pictures of toxic waste through chainlink fences. I figured someone might shoot at me.

Just be aware that its 107 miles (171 km) from Boulder to Laramie (via Rt. 287).

I think Rudy was planning on taking a significantly longer route to avoid highways.

I am also wondering if there is someone out there who will have extra room in a car for me during the Laramie portion of the Colorado 1000 days - Unfortunately I will not be able to do the CO portion.
My Itinerary: arriving in Laramie (airport) Wednesday August 9 9:50 pm - depart from same Wednesday Aug. 16 (12:01 pm)
I plan to camp preferably at Yellow Pine National Forest Campground. Obviously I will help pay for gas etc.
e-mail me. Thanks.

So, here's more: anyone going to Yellow Pine or surrounds from Denver airport on Thursday evening?

The nice airport shuttle people who used to drop me off at the monument aren't in business anymore, but I'm sure I can make it regardless...
Aug 3, 2006 5:37 PM #
Swampfox:
There is a shuttle which will get you as far as the west side of Cheyenne, from DIA. Google Shamrock Express for times, reservations, etc. I think it's $34 one way.

Terry and I will attend the whole 1000 Day, and we will likely be available to help transport U.S. Team mates, U.S. Team supporters, and maybe even miscellaneous others who fall in neither category. ;-)

Tundra/Desert:
Yes Mikell, I saw that one... the 11 pm Greyhound actually sounds better since it goes all the say to Laramie. So I'm sure I'll see everyone at the start on Friday.

ParkSchool:
Ernst (and possibly others): I will be attending most of the Laramie portion along with a car. I will be happy to provide transportation when feasible. I arrive in Denver around midnight on 8/9 and will drive to Laramie the same night. I depart after the event on Tuesday, again out of Denver. I would be happy to share a campsite (with or without my own tent) or make my own arrangements for accommodations. Alternatively, would be happy to share a hotel room with any interested party (gender irrelevent). I plan to finalize my plans on Sunday, so would need to hear proposals by around noon EST (or is it EDT, I can never keep it straight). I can be reached directly via my cell phone (which I will try to keep charged) at 617-719-8849.

Hi Jeff, I am interested in the return part on Tuesday.

Vladimir, you may consider your spot in the car reserved for the Laramie to Denver leg on 8/15. When do you need to arrive in Denver on Tuesday?
Aug 3, 2006 8:14 PM #
jjcote:
I'll share a room, Jeff. I arrive Thursday night (I hope). Want to make the reservation? Let me know soon -- I hit the road tomorrow night.
Aug 3, 2006 8:36 PM #
Tundra/Desert:
Um 4 pm? flight is at 6 pm. Thanks!
Aug 3, 2006 9:30 PM #
ParkSchool:
Vladimir -- 1:30 departure on Tues should be possible as event is a sprint, and should get us to airport around 4:00.

JJ -- I'll make reservations, but I'll take your input regarding preferred accommodations as I believe you have considerable local knowledge and I have none. Also, do you want me to book you through a date later than my departure on Tuesday afternoon?

Aug 4, 2006 3:54 AM #
DWildfogel:
I'm going to the last few days of the 1000-Day, arriving at DIA around 3pm on Tues, Aug 15. I have a rental car reserved, but I'd rather not do all the driving (Den-Laramie, Laramie-BV, BV-Den) myself. So, if anyone else is arriving in Den on 8/15 and is interested in sharing a rental car, please let me know. Alternatively, I'd be happy to catch a ride with someone on the 15th from Denver to Laramie, as there are several people I could then ride with for the rest of the trip.

I will be arriving in DEN on Friday evening, 8-ish, staying near the start. Will be staying in Laramie Sat night. They driving back to DEN for a 5ish flight on Sunday. I have a rental car and am happy to give rides.

Just on the off-chance that there's anyone as lazy as me at making arrangements other than flights and who is arriving/passing through Colorado Springs around noon on Friday 8/18, I have a currently vacant (other than me) rental car heading to Buena Vista for the model event. I'm not leaving until Tuesday morning (8/22) though. Happy to share if (part of) this fits anyone else's schedule.

When will the night-o results be posted?
Aug 16, 2006 3:07 AM #
Swampfox:
I'll post them when I get them. I'm just getting back from the apres Sprint Team Benefit activities this evening, which including hashing and pizza eating (with G Cake for dessert) and much tall tale telling. When I left Yellow Pine, I'm pretty sure certain important Results personages were still having some spirited bravo times around various of the campfires.

So, they'll be posted at some indeterminate time later.
Aug 16, 2006 3:14 AM #
Cristina:
This is all just a cover. The real reason that the night-o results haven't been posted yet is because there are still people out on the course. No one is ready to admit to the possibility that they have been devoured, so the finish crew has been burning the midnight oil, patiently awaiting their return. I'm not holding my breath, but at least I know why the results aren't up.
Aug 16, 2006 5:47 AM #
Swampfox:
The Finish crew rendered the official "Woods All Clear" to me today. But it must be noted that while it was declared that everybody is out of the woods, there was no accompanying declaration that attack badgers did not assist the process. Which in fact we know they did, somewhat gruesomely eating 2 3/5ths night orienteers, and thus keeping to their longitudinal averages.

As for the results themselves, the rumor I heard is that they have been posted, and that Cristina's mom is actually her sister. Or maybe it's the other way around.

PG:
I've posted maps from the 1000-day (group 1 and group 2). Scans aren't the best, but the best I could do on the road....

As for the event itself, the organization, terrain, courses, and general ambiance are all first-rate. Thanks, Swampfox.

"Or maybe it's the other way around."

My mom has been posted and the maps are my sister?

Goshawk encounter on the relay map: I was picking up controls in the east central part of the map during the thunderstorm. I went from Leg 4 #6 to #4 and had an encounter with two of them when I passed out of the wooded reentrant up onto the yellow spur. They were much less scary than the lightning though. Basically just giving a lot of warning cries and not diving at me. Once I had gone about 40 meters further they gave up and that was the last I saw of them.
