SUNDAY, JANUARY, 31: PAWTUCKAWAY STATE PARK, NOTTINGHAM, NH

You've run through the boulders, paddled to the islands, camped in the park, and
enjoyed a fall swim at the beach. Now try skiing on a map extended for a new
kind of orienteering experience at Pawtuckaway! Minimum distance from start to
finish is 2.5 miles. Terrain will include park roads, trails, and off-trail
routes. The highlight for many orienteers will be skiing across the snow-covered
ice on the lake.

This will be a point-to-point score event for experienced cross-country skiers
(sorry, no beginners or snowshoers for this event). Note that if conditions
deteriorate significantly this week from rain and warm weather, the event may
have to be postponed. In that case, Jim Arsenault's ski-O event at Gunstock may
be held on January 31 instead of February 7. We hope to have a definite answer
on whether the Pawtuckaway ski-O will be held by Friday, January 29. Please
check the UNO website or call the event director to confirm. We will also send
out a message on Friday to the UNO Updates and New England Orienteering e-mail
groups.

Registration and Starts: 9 to 11 AM. This is a popular snowmobiling area so
we're starting early to avoid having a full parking lot and noisy trails.
Orienteers will ski to the finish on the east side of the lake and be shuttled
back to their cars.

Course: Score-O with Western MA Rules. Controls will have three different
point values, depending on their level of difficulty. Gather as many points as
possible in 60 minutes (Short), 90 minutes (Medium), or 120 minutes (Long).
You don't have to declare which category you're in until you get to the finish,
which will be at the event director's house on the lake. Point penalties will be
applied for times over two hours.

Map: 1:10,000, extended and updated by J-J Cote. Ski-O map holders are
recommended, but large zip-loc bags and safety pins will be available at the
start for anyone who doesn't have a map holder.

Cost: Entry for this race is $5 per person, which will cover orienteering and
refreshments, including homemade chili, hot soups, and other food and drinks at
the finish.

Directions: Take NH 101 to Exit 5 in Raymond. Turn right (north) off ramp and
go 0.6 miles north on NH 107 to T-intersection. Turn left on NH 27, then
immediately right on NH 156. Go 1.3 miles to park sign and turn left on Mountain
Rd. Go 2 miles and turn left at park entrance. Parking will be in the lot where
camper registration lot immediately on the right. Look for O-signs.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 7: GUNSTOCK MOUNTAIN RESORT, GILFORD, NH
(may be moved up to 31 Jan, if Pawtuckaway event has issues with snow cover or
ice thickness)

Courses: Long 8-12 km, Medium 5-8 km, Sprint 2-3 km
Schedule: Registration 9 to10 AM, Long/Medium Starts 10:15 - 10:30 AM,
Sprint Starts 1 PM

$5 per course. XC Trail pass - $15 at XC Center. Warmup / wax testing area on
NW side of entrance road - on the parking lot side of the XC Center. Starts will
probably be in the stadium in front of the GNA clubhouse, across the road from
the XC Center.

Directions:
From I-93 North: Take exit 20 in Tilton, NH. Turn left on Rte. 3N. Travel along
Rte. 3N for about 10 minutes. Bear right onto the Laconia By-Pass 3/11 (just
past the Belknap Mall). Take the second exit, Rte. 11A in Gilford. Turn right
at end of exit ramp. Follow 11A east approximately 5 miles to Gunstock Mountain
Resort. Entrance is on the right. XC Center is the first building you see on
the right. Parking is just past the XC Center, then 2 quick right turns.

From I-95 North: Just south of Portsmouth take split to Routes 4 & 16
(Newington). This will put you on the Spaulding Turnpike. Take Spaulding
Turnpike to exit 15W for Rte. 11W to Alton. Stay on Rte. 11 around Alton
traffic circle and around Alton Bay. Take a left onto Rte. 11A. Take Rte. 11A
approximately 5 miles to Gunstock entrance on left. XC Center is the first
building you see on the right. Parking is just past the XC Center, then 2 quick
right turns.

If you are traveling from South or West of Boston MA, it may be best to travel
north on I-95 or I-495 and then exit off onto I-93 north. This route is probably
quicker than following I-95 to Portsmouth NH, although traffic conditions can
vary.

Unfortunately, the snow conditions aren't good enough to run either of these two events this weekend, so the Pawtuckaway ski-O will be held on Sunday, February 21. The Gunstock ski-O will be held on its original date, Sunday, Feb 7.

Looking forward to better snow in February!
