Henke:
Hi,
I am a swedish orienteering fan living in Harlem until november 22. Since the sport has been my life for the past 14 years I would love to get the chance to try some of your american maps on either a training or a competition. The problem is that I don´t have access to a car or that much knowledge on where to go. So if any of you know if there is a competition, training or anything orienteering related that can ease my abstinence relative close to NYC, please let me know. Time and distance is not my biggest problems but I don´t want to spend to much money on getting there and back. For example, I have no problem on taking a train or bus somewhere to meet up with someone with a vacant seat in their car.

I know this is a long shot but it´s worth a try.
Take care,
/Henrik

Check the web site of Hudson Valley Orienteering http://hvo.us.orienteering.org/. I also sent you an e-mail so that you can contact me.

Also check out Western CT Orienteering: http://www.faculty.fairfield.edu/rdewitt/wcoc/Sche....

You could take the train to Bethel, CT where you could get a ride with one of us who lives there. Also, people from the city often attend our meets so you might get a ride from one of them. We have a long meet next Sunday on really nice terrain.

I know that you said that you will be here until 22 NOV, but the CNYO
http://www.cnyo.us.orienteering.org has a meet on 22 NOV 09 29th Annual Turkey-O November 22, 2009 Highland Forest County Park, Fabius in Fabius, NY Highland Forest County Park, Fabius, NY

Directions: I-81 to Tully, NY exit. Rt 80 East 10 miles to park entrance. Follow O signs.

I will be driving down from up North from just North of Watertown, NY (near the Canadian Border) and will pass through Syracuse, Ny if you could get there I could get you to and from the event the rest of the way. I am new to Orienteering, so don't know what the area is like, but I was told it is a fun event. I went to another one that they had this past Saturday just outside of Syracuse and it was a blast. All the best, safe travels,

Paul

The CNYO web site is http://cnyo.us.orienteering.org/cnyo/ At least that is what I have bookmarked and it always works.
Paul I haven't been to Highland Forest in probably ten years and the last time was for ski-O but it is truly a very nice area with open woods but not very complex terrain. You will enjoy it.
Thanks for the head's up. There may be some visitors from Ottawa getting one last O-fix for the year.

You MUST get on the Harriman State Park maps - about 60 km NW of NYC. :) Hope you can get a ride there or someone may be able to give public transport directions. (I'm in St. Louis - can't help.)

I don't think Harriman is quite as close as 0km NW of NYC... But definitely worth getting to, anyway!

Would you believe 60 km?

Hey, I did have 'one-digit accuracy' - just the wrong digit.

Reach out to me if you want to train in Harriman. I live 0 KM (ok, actually 1 KM ) from Harriman. There are trains to and from the city all weekend. In as little as 1 an hour you can be in Suffern where I can pick you up and get you out on one of the WOC maps for some training.
May I ask what brings a Swedish Orienteer to Harlem?

Maybe he wants to study the advantages of a free market health care system by going to one of the place where the failure is obvious.

Thank you for all the replies! Right now I am looking on the events for this weekend, the WCOC in Pond Mountain or the NEOC in Mashamoquet Brook State Park or the DVOA in Camp Delmont. Is there anyone going to any of these events that can pick me and my girlfriend up somewhere?

My second option (maybe I have time for both of them) is that my girlfriend is probably going to a Team Handball tournament in West Point on november 14, and since the Harriman State Park is in the same direction I thought it´s maybe a possibility for me check out the maps there...
So, how do I buy the maps? Is there a permanent course? Where in the Harriman should I go? It looks huge.

Bernard>>> Thanks for the invite. From what I can see on google Suffern is in the opposite end of Harriman compared to West point but I will absolutely consider going there instead.
What brings us here?
We are students and this semester we are writing an essey, which means that we can basically be wherever we want to be since most of it is done via e-mail. So we decided to go to New York for 3 month. And we found a great apartment in Harlem...

Surebridge is the number one map, with the WOC course of 1993. There are no permanent markers on this course. Silvermine has a permanent course, but it is an older map. If you go out with Bernie, he can probably help out with maps. Or e-mail me. There is also a map of Central Park, pretty cool and close to Harlem.

Henke>>If you take the MetroNorth to New Haven on Sunday morning, we can pick you up at the train station and take you to the WCOC Pond Mountain meet. You have my email, let me know if you are interested.

sounds like things are coming together for you. Let me know when you are interested in Harriman and we will work someting out either with me or with one of the other local orienteers. Unfortunately 14th is bad weekend for me because I will be backpacking in Harriman.

Hi again,
This is a long shot, but I´ll try.
Unfortunately I lost my ride for tomorrow so if there is anyone going to the WCOC Pond Mountain meet tomorrow and has room for two people in there car and can pick us up somewhere just write something here. I will be up for another hour or so.
