We have a bid moving through sanctioning for the 2010 Intercollegiate Champs to be held President's Day weekend in Raleigh, NC. We have also received notice from the Ski-O committee that they would like the US 2010 Ski-O Championships on the same weekend. How many US collegiate Oers out there would consider this a serious conflict?

From previous years competitors, none.

Also I think the Intercollegiate bid is for the next weekend. I don't have 100% knowledge to speak to that, though.

On the semi-official a meet calendar, the Intercollegiate bid is, in fact, for President's Day weekend, Holly.

On a perhaps more relevant note, I know of one person who placed in last year's intercollegiate championships who has ever even been to a ski-o, so... yeah, no conflicts.

Drew--
That's true, but I don't think that weekend is nailed down just yet and I think the next weekend is more likely. We should know really soon.

It sounds like the results of this discussion will decide the weekend.

Could be, but I don't think so. I don't want to speak too much to it on an open forum because I don't want to misrepresent the official position of the club and don't know all the details. But I think they've pretty much already decided. Besides, you guys (WP) prefer the second weekend anyway, as I understand.

I don't think there is to much of a conflict, except I know a lot of colleges don't have Presidents Day off so that could present a problem if an intercollegiate race is on the Monday.

If most colleges don't have Presidents Day off, it would not matter which weekend is selected for the Intercollegiates.

A possible consideration is that schools (PS, MS, HS) in some parts of the country (NE, NW?) have the week starting with Presidents Day as a winter break. This brings the possibility of attracting vacationing families, especially given the warmer climate of NC. However, whether the beginning or ending weekend is better in this regard, I am not sure.

the week starting with Presidents Day as a winter break.

I think that for P/M/HS, it really depends on the school district; I know that my cousins in NJ have Thursday-Monday or Tuesday of President's day weekend off, but my brother has Monday-Friday of the week including after after President's day off, and other schools in my area only have Monday or Monday and Tuesday off.

I, unfortunately, do not go to a college which observes President's day, but some do (MIT, UW). Some also observe the Friday of President's day week (Williams). Some don't appear to have any time off around President's day week (UNC, WashU). (These colleges picked because either I'm familiar with their calendars or because people who attend them are likely to place at Intercollegiates.)

I think that since there doesn't seem to be any uniformity for college schedules, you shouldn't make that a priority for scheduling. (I'm sure there are other, more easily assessable issues, like volunteer availability.)

(Edit: If anybody from West Point is offended because I didn't include you, I know you guys will show up no matter what, so... =P)

I just wanted to put it out there that scheduling an official race on the Monday would conflict with school schedules. Other than that I don't think the weekend matters that much.

JLaughlin:
This is the first time in quite a few years that WP has President's weekend off.

Drew - it is okay that you didn't include us. What you say is true.

Just as long as there is no official race on the monday i don't think it would conflivt with the Ski-o. I have never raced Ski-o (would love to try though!) So would go to intercollegiates anyway.

FWIW: the meet is now in sanctioning with sprint and middle on Saturday Feb 20 and 'classic' on Sunday Feb 21.

The revised proposed dates for the IC is 2/20;2/21, 3 races, 2 days.
