I'm working with the arena production for the NAOCs. There will be a Red Start Group for M21E and W21E, which will be selected based on WRE score, probably with a few additional discretionary spots. This Red Group will start late to allow most other participants to finish in time to watch the elites.
The sprint and middle arena will have the start for the elites in the arena itself, as well as spectator control and radio controls. I will provide the announcer(s) with computer support to report splits and results.
I'm looking for one or more race announcers for the event. The successful candidate should:
- be good at putting on a show
- know North American elite orienteering
- have no ambition to run in the Red Group him/her-self
- be willing to start early as a pre-runner for his/hers own race
- prepare for the job several days in advance, studying start lists, athlete's profiles etc.
Please send me an email if you are interested!
In this context, what do you mean by "arena"?
Where I'm from, an arena is a building in which major events (games, concerts) are held, with seating for about 20,000.
In the context of an orienteering race, the arena is the area around which the finish is located. Sometimes the arena can also hold the location of the start, as well as one or several spectator controls. At big international orienteering events, the arena typically includes race announcing, large screens showing pictures from the forest and hundreds or sometimes thousands of spectators.
Arena is the established terminology at World Orienteering Championships, World Cups and similar level events.
sounds great pi . i might be able to help ( sprint only where i'll run my class- earlier )..just in case
There is no one better than Baltero.
I might be interested, but would rather share the job if possible. Especially with someone with an Euro accent.
To make the announcer's job that more interesting, we've just confirmed that we'll be getting sport-ident radio controls which can transmit race progress from the forest to the finish. This should make things interesting for all those following the race from the staging / finish arena.
Balter did an excellent job with negligible advance notice at the CSU Middle Distance final on 25 April 2009.
