Celebrate the Summer Solstice - June 20 & 21

Delaware Valley Orienteering Association
Proudly Invites You to Two Days of Wonderful Summer Orienteering.
The Summer Solstice
June 20-21, 2009

Camp Delmont and Green Lane

Montgomery Country Parks, PA.

DVOA invites you to celebrate the Summer Solstice - the longest day of sunlight for places in the Northern Hemisphere. June 21st also marks the beginning of summer.

Sun rise - 5:24 a.m.
Sun set - 8:30 p.m.

Day 1
Camp Delmont (Never-Before-Used Map)
Musser Scout Reservation
Scale 1:5,000
Contours 5m
Produced 2007

Camp Delmont is a brand new map. The area is mostly used by scouts and features a decent amount of man-made objects, a moderate trail network, some very distinct rock features, and a combination of flat and hilly topography. Vegetation mapping is generally up-to-date with a few slight changes. While field checking I've noticed some indistict trails are more indistinct now and some times it's hard to see them. Also, advanced courses will encounter a new trail which is not mapped, but that should not distract you. Courses will use the best terrain available with a high density of controls, so please check control numbers carefully before you punch. The course design features some longer legs with controls picking legs and change of direction.

White: 2.2km / 55m / 11c
Yellow: 3.3km / 105m / 13c
Orange: 4.1km / 125m / 19c
Brown: 3.6km / 120m / 15c
Green: 4.6km / 155m / 16c
Red: 6.0km / 185m / 23c

US Team Fundraiser - a suggested donation of $10 to the US Team is greatly appreciated.
Sprint: 2.2km / 70m / 14c

Notes:

White, Yellow, Red, and Sprint courses will use one start area. Orange through Brown courses will use a remote start area. Please make sure you follow the correct streamers to the start.

There is no running water at the camp but we will have use of pit toilets. We'll have plenty of water at the finish, but we ask that if you need to fill camelbacks or water bottles that you bring your own supply so that we don't run out of water before the end of the day.

Water stops on courses will be distributed close to most obvious route choices. Please plan your routes appropriately.

Parking area is limited and we are asking you to carpool if possible and park your cars closer to each other.

Day 2
Green Lane
Scale 1:10,000
Contours 5m
Produced 2006

The Green Lane map was used in the past several times for local DVOA events including last year's club Long-O Championships. Vegetation mapping is still quite up to date, but it looks greener this time of the year. There are several easy controls to get you across roads. All courses cross park roads. Please watch carefully for cars as you cross roads. Please use the crosswalk when possible.

Only three courses will be offered. Do one of the courses, do them all as a team of three or do them all solo.

Course 1 (White/Yellow): 3.2km / 60m / 11c
Course 2 (Orange/Brown): 3.1km / 95m / 11c
Course 3 (Green/Red): 5.1km / 110m / 15c

Safety:

Roads: All courses cross park roads. Please watch carefully for cars as you cross roads. Often the road crossing is at an angle, so you can move along one side of the road and wait for a safe time to cross, with little impact on your final time.

Electronic punching

We will use electronic punching with the SportIdent system. Participants may rent an e-punch for $1 per day if they do not have one of their own.

Hazard

Ticks and poison ivy are the usual suspects ay this time of the year.

Directions
Day 1:

From the Lansdale exit of the NE extension of the PA turnpike, go west on Rt. 63; continue through Harleysville and Vernfield; you will go down a very large hill and just beyond the bottom bear to the right by the Sumneytown Hotel onto Geryville Pike; at the first stop sign turn right on to Upper Ridge Rd. and the camp will be on your right about a mile up.

From Rt. 29 in Green Lane turn onto Rt. 63E by the Liberty Gas Station; go up the hill and about 1/2 mile up at the top turn left onto UpperRidge Rd. by the old Green Lane school/ Play and Learn Daycare. At the stop sign at the top of the hill go over Geryville Pike and the camp will be on your right about a mile up.

Day 2:

Hill Road is still closed and will not be open for our event. They are putting in a trail with a tunnel under Hill Rd. connecting the main Green Lane Park with the Green Lane Nature Center park. You will need to enter the park from Rt. 29 onto Deep Creek and then right onto Snyder Rd. to the main parking lot. If coming from Rt. 663 you can go in on Hill Rd but you will have to turn right on to Green Lane Rd and go all the way around the lake to Deep Creek Rd. and then left on Snyder to the main parking lot. There will be O signs out on Rt. 29 to direct you but not on Rt. 663 as it is good 6 miles from the park and only someone who know this way would come that way.

Camping:
Camping is available at Green Lane Park for $25.00/per night for a county resident. The Porter's are residents and will get a camp site for anyone that wants to camp. There are flush toilets and showers there and each site has a picnic table and grill. There is electricity in the bathrooms, but not at the sites. A few rules that you should know about camping are:

One family or 5 non family member to a site
No pets permitted
No alcohol beverages
One car per site
