HVO recently started a program to ease the running on the Harriman State Park maps. The success of the program is now published at the HVO web site. Clean woods now

"This is a surprising move into the right direction", said future HVO elite runner Deidre Young. "No scratches, no ticks, just fast running. This will make orienteering a much more popular sport."

An not identified adventure racer objected and said, he will miss the crawl through the mountain laurel, since it reminded him of the suburban cowboy games in the Sixties.

I also thought this was an April Fools joke. But, after today's Silvermine fire I'm not so sure we haven't seen the beginning of the Clean Woods process..

Time for a meet in Silvermine?

We do have a meet at Silvermine on 4/22. Some controls are/were already there, most of them away from the fire, three of them close to the ski area.

At first, I assumed that it was a photograph of Meremac State Park (where SLOC hosted the North Americans years back and where practiced last week to prep for the Pig :) - you know, 'similar' vegetation). But the trees at Meremac are oak, not coniferous.

The reason MO state parks are so open is that Missouri DNR does burn most parts of most parks very regularly - usually Jan through April when the weather is right and the parks are little used. We have had events scheduled on the weekend past the unscheduled burns. Running through a cm of ash is a bit weird, especially when some logs and stumps are still smoldering. It does change light green woods to white and we have lost a few controls set out early.

The actual image is from the Swiss night o champs next Saturday (click on to see the images. The woods are very flat and open, except for areas with some wind damage, fallen trees a.s.o.

They try an interesting new format: There is a mass start for each category plus loops with map exchanges (farsta). The idea is, that people will have a hard time following each other at night anyway and will lose contact quickly.

There was a discussion about abolishing the Night o champs completely. This is new an experiment to revive it in a different format.

Hey, the last picture shows that the TD (whatever that is) is Urs Hofer. I assume this is the same guy who lived in the USA for a while.

The Swedish night-O champs used to be mass start for a long time, and Mats Troeng used to boycott it saying that a mass start at night is stupid because of following, pack running, and the luck factor. So they finally used individual starts last year, Mats ran, and, sure enough, won.
