Does anybody know anything about the maps that BAOC is using for the A-Meet in November (Morgan Territory Regional Preserve, and North Portion of Joseph P. Grant Park)? Have these maps been used in any recent A-Meets, and if so, are there any online copies of the Blue courses from those competitions?
Thanks,
John
The Morgan Territory map was used a couple of years ago at the O in the Oaks meet. One side of the map was very hilly. I don't know anything about the Grant Park map.
For the short champs, we will be using the "flat" side of Morgan Territory, I would think. Although the area was completely remapped for the O in the Oaks meet a few years ago, BAOC has been using this area for the last 15 years or so. If any courses exist online I'm not aware of them, though.
North Joe Grant is a new map on new terrain. We have had several major events at South Joe Grant but none of us really know what North Joe Grant is going to be like. Rumor has it that the nicest, flattest part of the map is far from the parking area, both in terms of distance and climb. So expect a hilly slog up to the good terrain, some flat orienteering in the middle (by BAOC standards), and then a long haul back down to the finish. Sounds perfect for a long-O, though!
We promise neither area will be anything like Fallen Leaf Lake, so don't hesitate to sign up!
See this map:

Note the scale is set to 1:100,000, and the contour interval (I think) is 50 meters. Significant parts of the map seem to have a ~25% grade, typical of Bay Area hills. Hills & route choice are good for long-O', right?
The old Joe Grant is south of the main road (roughly) the new Joe Grant is north of the road. North Joe Grant doesn't appear to be substantially different than South Joe Grant.

My new-new place will be available for the event. There is one bed and floor space; first come, first serve. This is not the Quicksilver place. The place is within 50 minutes of driving to Day 1, 70 minutes to Day 2, and is very easily reachable by public transit or freeway from SFO and OAK airports. There are spectacular running possibilities. However, only a handful of BAOC maps are reachable by public transit within 2 hours, and only on weekdays. For some maps, there is an up to 5 km run from public transit on weekends. The event headquarters is 2 hours by public transit, 45 minutes by car. So, bring a vehicle with you please!
