for those who might be interested to add New Zealand to the trip there are extremely chip round tickets from LA to Auckland, NZ. on Qantas for $ 878 after tax and fees. This sale opened today and might not last long.

Historically this has been a very expensive route because Qantas and United have had a duopoly on it, but a couple of new airlines are starting up services this year which should drag prices down.

Once you get there your problems may not be over. We are lucky to be renting a car in Melbourne but my wife checked a couple of companies in Sydney, including Budget, the official rental car of WMG and it seems there may be no cars left to rent in Sydney during the WMG.
That seems not much of a problem in Sydney as it looks pretty easy to get to the Sprint sites by public transit but. . .Perhaps the orienteering organizers can lay on some bus transport in Lithgow to get to/from the town and the meet sites. Does anyone know?

Not sure about the buses.

Would be difficult to satisfactorily cover everybodies situation as I expect people to be spread out over that district. Maybe you could email "hilary" (thats her AP profile) and she might be able to answer you.

If there's trouble getting vehicles I'm sure the rental companies would pull them in from Newcastle or Wollongong to make up the numbers.

I just tried phantom booking a Toyota Corolla on the Hertz and Thrifty websites for 9-18 October, and the price is $220-$230 per week, which indicates they have plenty of cars available. The price would go up if their bookings are high.
