Wasn't this the same area where the WRC were held last time they were in NZ?
THought there might be the prospect of it being somewhere totally different.

I may even be encouraged to go to New Zealand. It'd be a first for me out of the country!

Verrry close to the last WRC in NZ in 2000, about 50km southeast by my reckoning. Or maybe not even that far. Do you think this one will have head-high thistles too?

leepback:
Head-high thistles? Not sure but we certainly found them last time. Might consider this event but haven't rogained in a little while.

No annoying European elite orienteers to fill the places this time I guess.

Tooms I'm partnering up with you for this one. No sleeping halfway around the course.

Justin W and I were officially last in NZ last time! We went to an ice-cream shop, threw the frisbee a lot and then with a couple of hours to go went for a 2hr run around a few controls and just punched a 10 pointer - and made it back in the nick of time to the oohs and ahhs of the floppy-hatted and bearded crowd. A much better way to rogaine!

Sounds like my kind of event with the terrain involved.

Hilarious!

What a stupid location. With so much interesting terrain in NZ why did it have to be here? The last WRC was the worse area for a rogaine I have ever done. The thistles were bigger than triffids!

Maybe they couldn't get access to anywhere more interesting? And aren't counting on getting any rogainers who competed 10 years previously....

I'm a bit with NSW Stinger in the fact that my interest would be greater if it had been somewhere entirely different. ( Iwas there 10 years ago)

Perhaps NZ is just too rugged for the most part and there's not much to choose from.

Yep a pretty crap area too steep too little route choice except to follow the trails. Not on my list

I think the course information posted on the event web site would call the above observations into question.

From the web site:
"In the meantime... a few words about the Event Site
The event site is located in Cheviot, a small rural town 120 kms north of the International Airport at Christchurch. The area is all private farmland, as are the venues for most rogaines in New Zealand. The area is bounded by the Waiau River to the north, by the Pacific Ocean coast to the east, a range of rolling hills on the west, and the Blythe Valley to the south. Cheviot is slightly north of the centre of the proposed map, and is 60 m above sea level.

Most of the terrain is open and fast, grassed farmland, with rolling hills and spur-gully terrain. A small amount of flat land lies west of Cheviot. Coastal hills to the east rise to a maximum of 423 m on Mt. Beautiful. A number of 300 m saddles provide easier access to the coast, and south of Cheviot the hills are easier, rising to between 120 and 200 m. The surrounding hills to the west vary between 200 and 300 m.

The views from the coastal hills are spectacular, with the night lights of Christchurch visible across Pegasus Bay. Seals may also be seen on the coastal strip although the rocky shoreline and steep cliffs preclude travel along the sea shore itself. A number of minor roads and farm tracks exist, but for the most part, travel will be cross-country rather than road-walking.

There are a few pockets of native forest in the eastern streams, and some plantation forests. There is very little shrubby vegetation that cannot be negotiated. There are NO bears, snakes, mosquitoes, tigers, jumping cactuses, or other nasties to spoil your fun or to demand caution. Farm animals - sheep, cattle, and deer - will be encountered."

Do not know what they have against jumping cactuses? Just bring your pliers!

Yeah....I've seen the kiwis' idea of "rolling hills in farmland". They're lying. :)

They haven't excluded the presence of thistles....coastal scenery sounds nice and it will probably be a bit better than in 2000 but the navigation would still be macro rather than micro.

What are the average day / night temperatures and humidity for the time of the race at Cheviot?

The event web site was recently launched at http://wrc2010.org.nz/ and the Entry Process will be available there soon. It has been published on the Australian Rogaining Association web site at http://rogaine.asn.au/Latest/ as well as I undwerstand on the Russian, Japanese, Estonia and Latvian rogaining web sites.
