One way is to look at which universities participate in the BUSA orienteering competitions. Here is info about last year's BUSA:

The most active university orienteering clubs are Edinburgh, Sheffield, and Oxford. But then, I'm somewhat biased... :)

There may be others, but these are the most active (or not, in Nottingham's case).

Cheers, unfortunatly I won't be going to Sheffield, because I live here and want to get out the city for Uni, though Newcastle is a possibility...hmmm.
So much to consider...

It's got to be Edinburgh if going North is what you fancy!

Yeah, but you have to do more than one subject if you go 2 a Scottish Uni, and I just want to do geography :(

Really? Is that a new thing?

Nah, it's the same for Trinity College in Dublin - you can't do geography on its own. You do 3 subjects in the first year, and then refine them to the one you want. This also makes these 4 year courses.
At the mo I'm looking Newcastle, Nottingham or possibly Bristol.
Anyone know where the nearest club to Aberystwyth is?
- That's my other choice.

It's maybe worth remembering that when you choose geography you'll do a large amount of chemistry, geology and other stuff aswell - subjects are very rarely as pure as the name suggests! I guess it depends where O' lies in your priorities - none of those clubs have very active university teams, though obviously NOC is a very active club based in Nottingham, and there is a training group from around Bristol who use AP regularly (schnitzer, kingtim, akhilleus etc). Newcastle is not a good bet - no real club at the moment and not many local orienteers or areas. One of the girls I used to coach is based just down the road in Durham and really struggles in that respect.

I went to Durham and not only was it not great for orienteering (or life in general really!) you had to do some external modules from your course in the first year anyway so it sounds a lot like Edinburgh eg I did politics and ended up with 3 Politics modules, 1 Geography, 1 Sport Studies and 1 Anthropology!

Hmm, in answer to phiggins - I've consideered going over to Ireland - as you can probably tell from my second name, Kilcoyne, my dads family are Irish. If I want to continue studying after 3 years at Uni, I'll probs go over to Ireland to do a masters, but at the moment I'm probably best staying in England.

To Becks - Yup, I know I'll do other stuff from 'mainstream' geography as it were, but I quite like that. I just don't see the point in doing other subjects without very many cross-overs with geography.
Good idea for NOC.

To JennyJ - Hmm, that's really interesting, considering all the good stuff I've heard about Durham.

Thanks everyone - this helps a lot :)

Shame you want to get out of Shef, we've got a fair few ShUOCers ensconced in the Geography department here!

Hey! I went to Trinity College to do geography! Luckily it had the other elements though because as I went through it I discovered that geographers didn't do much with maps! It was all economics, statistics, surveys, culture, sociology and paperwork. It was the geologists that made and used maps and thankfully I had that option after 2 years.

Yeah I know - Sheffield is a great place, countryside on your doorstep as well as the advantages of being in a city. Thing is, obviously I'll come home for the holidays so I should be able to still orienteer here.
Lol - it's true, there are almost no maps in geography, but you do get a lot of outdoorish people doing geography - even if they don't orienteer, walking and mountain biking are always possibilities.
Nottingham's looking promising - good campus, good course, chance to go overseas, good orienteering club nearby.
