Discussion: Attackpointers at Tiomila

BorisGr:
The Cambridge Sports Union team at Tiomila this year may not only be the first North American club team ever to run Tiomila, but possibly also the first ever team composed entirely of attackpointers. Are there any others that can make that claim?

Team CSU (starting number 163)
Str Löpare Längd SI
1) Ross Smith 12,7 km Rosstopher
2) Matthias Mahr 12,3 km mmahr
3) Brendan Shields 6,9 km bshields
4) Boris Granovskiy 16,5 km BorisGr
5) Greg Walker 6,9 km Biggins
6) Ken Walker, Jr. 9,6 km ken
7) Mikkel Conradi 9,6 km mindsweeper
8) Peter Gagarin 5,7 km PG

What do people think about having to pay to follow the event* on the web? I see the WOC organisers are also going to charge to get tv coverage of WOC events on the web.

* Can someone please translate the various Web tv options available on this page? I've searched but can't find them in English.

Simmo - here is a basic translation, others can probably do better and I'm not sure what Pre-O is.

Option 1: Whole event - everything. It seems to include a main channel of the event centre, a roving camera and GPS tracking on the map. (Top 10 or 20 teams have to wear a GPS unit).
Goes from Sat 9.45 to Sun 11.30
Cost 60kr

Option 2: Youth and open (non competitive/not pre entered), only these two events. Same 3 channels as before. Not sure if the juniors have GPS units though.
Sat 10.30 to Sat 4.30pm
Cost 30kr

Option 3: Womens and Pre-O (You'll need to check what Pre-O is) only.
Same channels as the other options.
Times Sat 14.45 to Sat 9.30pm
Cost 30 kr

Option 4: The mens race only, but this is the main race really.
All three channels
Time Sat 9.45 to Sun 11.30 (I'm sure I've still been running after 11.30 though. The winners will be finished long before this though.)
Cost 40 kr

Times are for local Swedish time and cost is in Swedish kr.

Hope this gives you an idea. The mens race is prob the most exciting but the womens is good to watch too.

Pre-O is Trail-O (from Precisions-Orientering). TV coverage should be exciting ;-)

I've been told by the organizers that they are not making any profit from the web-TV coverage, but only charging prices so they break even. That seems fair enough to me.

It would be interesting to know how many people would tune in to free web-TV coverage, surely enough that it would be valuable to event sponsors?

Depends who the sponsors are Candyman - I'm not going to be visiting a Swedish supermarket anytime soon. I'd like a Volvo, but can't afford it. But you have a good point as many of the prospective audience would be useful to the sponsors.

Who is providing the wherewithal for the broadcast? At JWOC 07, the main sponsor was the web broadcaster.

It seems to include a main channel of the event centre, a roving camera and GPS tracking on the map.

NB! If you want to watch all three channels simultaneously you need three different access codes. With only one you can "switch" between them, but I do not know how easy that will be. You might have to log off and on (and off and on)...

From the CSU crew departing Boston Friday evening via Iceland ---

Late update -- Ross has, well, let's say he's done the O' equivalent of arriving at the first control and finding out he has forgotten to bring his e-punch.

Translation -- Got to the airport, whoops, no passport. Fortunately we were here 3 hours early, so he is off fetching it.

Just trying to make sure we all maintain positive anxiety levels.

Peter

PS. Latest update -- he's back! Very fast trip to Newton and back. Excellent! We're psyched!

Latest update -- Brendan has arrived, so the Iceland crew is all here at Logan. Brendan claims to be missing his socks and a towel, but nothing crucial. I assume our coach has extra supplies....

Peter, given the pivotal role that carrots played in CSU's Jukola outing, are you adequately prepared? Will Morot fill the same function as the trusty porkkana did?

Good luck all!

Is anyone considering the WebTV option?
xe.com reports 60 SEK is about $10.04US, $10.17Can, and $10.76Aus.
I doubt my cable modem can sustain the data rates, but I might try it anyway.

So I've seen 9 out of 10 for the CSU team, Mathias not yet though his plane was due in a couple of hours ago so I expect he is here by now. Beautiful spot, beautiful day, nice castle. A little bit in the wrong time zone, but got some sleep on the plane so not so bad.

Here's a look at the place, first women finishing on leg 1 --

I just paid for the web-TV coverage. It seems ok, so far. Now and then it'll freeze for a few seconds of "buffering."

I hadn't planned to waste the entire day in front of the computer...but it looks like that might happen anyways.

Was that Sandra for OK Tyr who just went by steps behind Simone?

Some nearly live blog reports focused on IFK Mora (but with lots of English) is at:

Yup.

Looks like she had a good run.

So far the web-TV coverage is ok. You pay with a credit card and get a code immediately. You enter the code and can watch the coverage. You get three ways to watch - the main coverage, an extra camera, and GPS tracking. But, you can only watch one at a time and when you switch between views, you need to re-enter the code. That means you also get a little delay and see a Petzl logo for a few seconds. The announcing is almost entirely in Swedish. I heard just a few words in English.

If you can understand Swedish, the coverage is quite good. If you can't, I'm not sure...you get lots of video and you can follow the results.

Spike:
The GPS tracking is working for the last leg of the women's race. The link dedicated to GPS tracking shows the map and the runners in black and white. The main coverage is, right now, showing GPS tracking in color, but the map is so fuzzy that you can't really see what it is showing. Right now, the IFK Lidingo tracking dot has disappeared.

My first impression is that the GPS tracking coverage is a disappointment for someone following on the web. But, maybe it'll get better.

It's working also now, but that's the problem: it never works during the most interesting parts (start and finish) due to overloading. And we paid for it!

The web-TV was working a lot better during the women's race. Maybe it'll improve when some folks in Europe give up and go to sleep.

No Swisscheese during leg 4? Instead we have:
Arto Ylä-Kotola Vehkalahden Veikot 1

I guess it has something to do with 'the hip', too bad if this is right.

Can anyone tell us how CSU is doing? I'm not sure I'm reading the results correctly...it looks like kenny finished in the top 100 on his leg, only 11:56 behind the leg winner. Wow.
Apr 27, 2008 4:41 PM #
PG:
Well, CSU did good, then not so good, then good, then good some more, then ooops...

Meaning, William, last leg, skipped a control, maybe a 100-meter leg at most, in the middle of a brilliant run. So we ended up DQ.

Results.

347 teams. We were 272nd after Ross on leg 1, 295 after Mathias (one bad control), 293 after Brendan (one bad control), 254 after Boris on the long night leg (16.6 km), 245 after Greg, still mostly in the dark, 233 after Kenny, 223 after Mikell, 227 after PG, 233 after Ken Sr., and William would have had us end up in 193rd, except we didn't.

zzzzzz...
Oh, I´m awake!

Just back from the land of the semi-dead ;)
After 42 hours without sleep I finally crashed just after midnight Sunday - so I certainly didn´t add much to the entertainment after the race, but had a good time hanging around with the CSU team in Uppsala before going home on Monday morning.

PG just summed it all up very well in the few words above - I think the team did well and they should be psyched to do better next time (there´s already talk about 2010).

On afterthought some of the goals we had - spoken or unspoken - as a team may have been set too high, but some adjustments had to be made underways...

Goals - not necessarily in order of importance:

Goal 1: Finish the whole relay
* sadly enough that goal wasn´t fulfilled :(

Goal 2: Place around 150 or at least beat our start number (#163)
** even without the unfortunate missing punch that wouldn´t have been fulfilled and may have been hard to reach (~42 minutes may not have been possible to cut off these times even with a set of ten clean races?)

Goal 3: Pace around 8 min/km according to the most optimistic time table
*** Goal accomplished for the team as a whole. The miscalculations of estimated running times by the course setters made the whole competition a lot faster than expected - and put a lot more teams between CSU and the expected placing though.

Goal 4: Winning the bet against Jagge and Rastivarsat.
**** This was not won - Rastivarsat finished 137th and with the handicap this called for a 177th place, which was within reach, but not quite even with a 'clean punch card'.

Goal 5: Having fun!
***** From what I heard everyone enjoyed their Tiomila experience and had a good time!!

I will post some photos from Tiomila - I have already started with the Youth Relay and will put some more up later tonight.
