Discussion: JWOC JabberWOCky

Hi all,
The Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC 2024) is coming up soon, so I thought I start a thread for all the non-athletes - (the US team will doubtless be using the US Team blog). This is for the parents, former athletes, opinionated observers and others nations to weigh in.

Since this is for punditry by the non-experts (myself included) JabberWOCky seemed like an appropriate name. For anyone unfamiliar with Lewis Carroll's work, it is described on Wikipedia as follows: "Jabberwocky" is considered one of the greatest nonsense poems written in English.

Before descending into nonsense - I am not promising poetry or greatness - (but perhaps others can provide both), I'll add some links to actual data.

The US team is here:

This is the 3rd time (that I know of) that JWOC is being hosted by Czechia. With JWOC 2013 being the most recent.
Are there any memories from athletes who attended JWOC 2013?
It was the first JWOC to feature live TV coverage.

Speaking of live TV coverage, you can follow the JWOC 2024 races here:
It costs 25Euros for the full week of events, which probably doesn't fully cover their costs, but your subscription would help keep TV coverage going in future.

If tracking GPS routes on maps is more your thing than live TV, or if you are a dual screen multi-tasker - here is the live tracking website:
As of Wed 26th the website is not fully populated yet, but it will be by July

For kiwis, race time is 10 hours behind. We're used to the late nights...
Jun 26, 2024 9:59 PM #
Why don't they let them race with everyone else, don't they like them? Must be hell on the control collecters having to wait for the Kiwis to start (and finish).

What are all the dsqs for?! Seems like a lot of mp
Jul 1, 2024 3:16 PM #
The DSQs are carry-overs from an MP in an earlier leg
Jul 1, 2024 3:23 PM #
Yeah still just seems like a lot
Jul 1, 2024 3:29 PM #
Similar percentage to past 2 years
Jul 1, 2024 7:13 PM #
Hmmm still seems high and by some of the top teams. Would be interesting to see where the MPs came from and if planners are being sneaky or issues. But then again if you don’t take a chance and push yourself to the best you can on a relay then you won’t improve and sometimes you end up on the wrong side (from recent experience it sucks but good leaning!)
Looking forward to the next few races!
Jul 1, 2024 7:16 PM #
How did others find the TV coverage? The feed was breaking up a lot for me but I'm not sure if that was a problem at our end or theirs.
Jul 1, 2024 7:36 PM #
MPs are quite common in sprint relays from people following rather than reading their maps. Didn't look like there were any sneaky closely placed controls on the gps map.
Jul 1, 2024 7:57 PM #
The TV coverage was largely unwatchable for me. The commentary was good, but the video very choppy, blurry, and shaky. I've got no problem paying to support the coverage, but I'm hoping for higher quality the rest of the week.

On the topic of runners who mis-punched, I heard that the top GB team had an SI stick that didn’t download at all, and the 1st leg runner had a backup SI stick which recorded all except the first control. So quite painful for them.

The courses also had a lot of close controls with forking so checking codes was critical today

From my watching the TV coverage itself was fine. What wasn't was the cameras being used out on course and/or the transmission of said cameras. The feed from on course was barely watchable but as soon as they switched to the arena cameras the video quality was consistently good.
Jul 2, 2024 12:05 AM #
Jul 2, 2024 12:59 AM #
Coverage was blurry for me during a lot of the feed. It was still fun to see the arena area. I ended up focusing on the live tracking on another computer so that I could follow all teams. Overall, such good fun to watch and good to see the juniors kick-off the race week! Excited to see more! From the NA side of things, a big shout out to RA and AH for their relay legs!
Jul 2, 2024 8:35 AM #
Broadcast quality much better today.
Jul 2, 2024 11:42 AM #
I really liked the stretches when the drone followed a runner for a few legs! Well done to all - looked like physically and mentally demanding courses.
Jul 2, 2024 1:05 PM #
on the MP front, i also assume that a lot are because the first control was forked and people are unlikely to check their codes and instead just zoom after the mass start or the people who were passed off to right in front of them

Pink Socks:
This may be a dumb question, but if I pay for the coverage, can I watch them as replays later, or is it only available live?

It would be fun for my daughter and I to watch (especially after buzzing about PNWOF!), but without getting up ridiculously early.

@Pink Socks, my daughter (11 years) and I have definitely enjoyed watching it. We also watched the US gymnastics Olympic trials together the other night. Watching the two sporting events in the same few days have offered a good opportunity to talk about sports and the role they take in someone's life, and what 'doing your best means' in different contexts! Enjoy!

Today, the supporters out here in Czechia got to run on the Czechia Tour events on the same map as the long distance for the JWOC athletes yesterday.
It was great to go on the map that we were watching GPS dots on the day before, and have some of the same or similar control locations.

That said, I will say that for my course the routes and course design was very different - it shows that the Czech's understand the nuances of good course design that we could be running on the same map (with 1:10,000 scale thank goodness:-) but have much easier and safer routes - I had a trail option on all but the shortest legs, and very little climb compared to the JWOC courses - and those hills are severe. We also had ideal running temps - cool and dry, vs. the rain and humidity yesterday. All in all, a fun way to spend the 4th.
Jul 4, 2024 5:28 PM #
Sounds similar to my experience of the public courses at last year's Czech World Cup. I ran my long course that was challenging for my age group knowing the elites used a different area (same finish) and when I saw their courses afterwards I was gobsmacked at just how difficult it looked. I'd have been out there for hours if I'd run on it!
