Discussion: EMIT cards?

in: WMOC 2024 Finland (Aug 2–9 - Turku, Åbo, FI)

It's recommeded to purchase a WMOC Branded EMITv6 card I'd prefer to rent, but wondering if rentals will be an older card and does it matter?

EMIT is rubbish.

79 Euro!
I won't be buying one...

The battery in emit sticks dies in about 5-8 years. The stick fails when the battery dies, and the battery is non-replaceable. The stick then becomes disposable e-waste.

Unless you are attending many emit events (Norway and a few other places) I would rent. Finland uses both emit and sportident, so it's curious they are using emit for a big international event.

The only reason I accept that EMIT still exists is to put some sort of check on Sportident’s exorbitant prices…

But just think of the collector's value of this special edition!

@bchubb Maybe you´ll get v5 car when you rent. But this is the same card just without a LED showing you if you have punched. But as Icefield wrote it´s worth if you plan to attend several EMIT events in the next 5 - 8 years (my avg EMIT lifetime is 7 years).
@icefield Finnland don´t use SportIdent. At least I never seen it there and I´m in Finnland for orienteering at least once a year.

+1 ^ what Steffen said. The LED on the v6 is a lot nicer than no led on the v5. The one time I borrowed a v5 it also didn't register a punch (but the pin punched the paper card so they verified.) +1 EMIT is rubbish, but emiTags are nice; still not as good as SIAC.

emiTag is horrible. Takes way too much work to organize a event with them.

@Steffen @Matt-S Thank you! It appears I do want a v6 card which is what I need to know. I can decide once at the event as I can't order it from outside the EU anyway. Maybe I'll be lucky and get a v6 Rental.

@Steffen Don't know about orienteering, but SI was used at the World Rogaining Championships in 2015 in Saariselkä

Even the 2021 WMTBOC where the majority of attendees were from outside Finland the organisers got an exemption from the IOF timing rules to use EMIT. I think that rule's been updated now though (allows for both SI and EMIT).

WMOC this year in Finland will use EMIT which translates into an extra cost for foreign competitors to rent one
It is a really bad decision. I'm sure some people will not attend just because of that.
