Breaking News: The Classic at Buttes Pass (Mon) has now been sanctioned as an OUSA National Ranking Event (NRE).
Enjoy the desert and score some ranking points at the same time!
Only 43 more spots left. Grab one while you can: https://www.anzaborrego2024.com/
So I know I am an idiot and it's my own stupid problem. But.
Selling out is not a typical happening in orienteering. Kudos to the organizers, primarily to Mark, for making it happen. Clearly many things must have been done right in the past for the event to have become such a magnet.
In trail running in 2024 much more than at any time in the past, key destination events sell out if not within hours of opening, then within days, close to a year in advance. For two participants in the family who race most weekends, we must now budget hundreds of dollars extra because of the shift.
Has any thought been given to a waitlist like it's done in other sports?
Got an answer via the website. Very clear that latecomers are unwanted! Plenty of things to do that weekend, we found an amazing trail run and Carlsbad Marathon's 5 km is not sold out. We'll certainly have fun and will keep this in mind for future planning.
The black-and-white statement on their Registration page is not 100% in alignment with the more flexible-sounding info on their FAQs page. I guess we're within the 30-day window but still ahead of January 9th for a possible transfer (not applicable to me since I'll be at the Georgia Navigator Cup but FYI for others).
Can I cancel and get a refund?
SDO offers a full refund via Paypal for participants who request a cancellation at least 30 days before the event by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. Unfortunately, we are not able to offer refunds to those who cancel within 30 days of the competition. However, we are able to transfer entries to a different person if the request is received before Tuesday, Jan 9th.
Tundra/Desert- I emailed you at your US team email address
That email kicked back Vladimir. You have first dibs on my Anza Borrego slot before I post it publicly. Can you provide me contact info @ 917-881-3225?
Okay since I haven't heard from from Vladimir I will post publicly. I have a slot available for the Desert-O fest. I just can't make it. Slot is good for all four days.

Thank you for thinking of me! There are two of us and trading is too much work. Looking at how few kids are signed up, one would think that both the organizers and Orienteering USA would be invested in getting that junior attendance up, not just the M65s with vacation days and ample funds and planning horizon. But it's a successful event, so obviously the organizers know what works for them the best. We're already entered in running events that weekend in the San Diego area that aren't sold out and these fees are non-refundable and we'll enjoy the trip and thank you all.
Fun time of year for San Diego County vacationing! Here's to me finding someone to snag my slot! Hehehe...!
Lots of things to do in Carlsbad on weekends, like playing a high-stakes game of poker at Casino Royale
For being a baller hotel it's not even that much more than boring chains in mid market cities. New life goal added.
Thanks for a great event! Thank you Mark and all volunteers. This was my first time to Anza Borrego, loved it, and hope to come back.
This was an event of the highest quality. We have been attending AB for many years and it keeps getting better. The course design was superb. Special thanks to Matej Sebo for his delicious Middle and Classic courses. Mark Prior and SDO: thanks for the enormous effort you put into this.
Most awesome weekend of orienteering!!
Many thanks to all the organizers!!
I will be back.
Yes, very fun weekend. Thanks to SDO, Mark, Matej, and the whole organizing team. Wish there wasn't a park-mandated cap on attendance, although having more demand than you can accommodate is a good problem to have.
Going in, I was skeptical of a single event center serving four races, but it worked well with different maps with different scales & levels of detail for each event.
Other details I appreciated:
-viable options to camp or stay not-too-far-away in town
-well-stocked and varied refreshment table
-larger scales for night and maze-O, even on Green/Red/Blue
-walk to starts that weren't excessive
-results, info, announcements, lists taped to the cargo truck
-enough portopots, restocked TP... Never a line.
-one NRE but other low key, fun events.
-Air mode for NRE. Wish whole weekend's controls had been SI Air enabled.
Thanks again. Looking forward to another visit...
