You all probably know the television game show Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader? Well perhaps orienteering can launch its version, ‘Are You Faster Than an 86-Year-Old?’ And perhaps we can film the pilot right here in Florida in January.
Think of it. Orienteering has been getting worldwide publicity lately for its ability to help seniors retain cognitive ability and for the sport’s ability to retain elder participants.
In January a group of some 75 orienteers and friends, mostly from Sweden, will be coming to Florida, getting on a ship to ‘orien-tour’ the Caribbean and then visit the Tampa area for three days of orienteering. Three days with three different types of Florida orienteering terrain. The courses will be set according to ability rather than age classes. – Yellow/ Novice, Orange/ Intermediate, Green/ Short Advanced, Blue/ Long Advanced and perhaps one super long advanced. That’s probably what you do at your local events, right?
The 86-year-old? She’s no slouch. Eivor Steen-Olsson was on Swedish relay world championship teams back in the 1960s. She and three others on the tour won medals at the latest World Masters Orienteering Championships.
So here we have it. In less than two months you have a chance to compare yourself to four world masters orienteering champions. How good are you? You can find out all without spending the cost of a trans-Atlantic flight.
AND as we try to ‘sell you’ on Florida orienteering you get to find out at really bargain prices.
Read all about it and follow the link to the MLK Weekend ‘Orienteering Trifecta’. See you at the Beach.
