Hi Anna and Huw, yes there is still a junior trip this summer to Sweden. I will admit that I had backed off on the planning because I had not gotten any real response back when I put the info out at first, so I didn't put a great deal of effort into the planning if there was no interest. But it seems I was wrong so I can give you what I have now and what I hope to do. US Air has a very good price for roundtrip from La Guardia, NY to Stockholm ~ $951. I plan to leave later in the day on July 5 arriving in Stockholm at 9AM on July 6. Spending the 6th in Stockholm sightseeing, etc. Leaving on the 7th to go to Karlstad for a junior training camp with Tom Hollowell and his O club there so it will be training as well as social. We will be there for the week leaving either the 11 or 12 depending what you opt to do for the second week. The choices are going to the Fin 5 with the Child family or going sightseeing with me in Gothenberg and the southern part of Sweden. I have very good friends that live in that area and I want to visit with them and do some sightseeing with them and there will also be some more orienteering with their O club. I just not sure it the orienteering will be training or club events that are planned for that week. My group will head for the O-Ringen the friday before, the 18 and arriving at the O-Ringen on the 19th. Those going to the Fin 5 will leave the 12 for Finland and return on the over night ferry of the 18 arriving in Stockholm the 19 and spending the day in Stockholm and traveling to the O-Ringen on the 20th arriving around noon that day. The O-Ringen runs from the 19 to the 26. We will drive back to Stockholm on the 26 and spend the night there flying back to the USA on the 27 arriving in NY later afternoon, 4PM I thinking.

Now costs is the part that I had not finished as I didn't think that there was interest. So I can giving you what I have so far.
As the both of you are older than 16 your event fee to the O-Ringen is about $142, the lodge is $70 for the week and food should be about $175 or so for that week. Also we will need to get bus passes for about $20 for the week. I still need to get the cost of the training week. I plan to stay in youth hostels while traveling and that will cost $20-30 per night and right now I know that we will hopefully be staying in a hostel the two night we are in Stockholm. Also I think that if we plan on about $25 a day for food we should be ok. That is days on the road. The cost of the Fin 5 is about $400 - 450.00 for the week. That includes entry fee, lodgings, special sport Ident to rent, food and the round trip ferry.

I plan to ask for a grant from the Junior Developement Program to cover the cost of the rental cars and gas so hopefully we won't have that expense.

What you need to do now if really planning to go is:

Contact Boris with your class for the O-Ringen and tell him that you will be traveling with me, Janet Porter.

get going on your passport if you don't have one

if going to the Fin 5 let me know so that I can get you in touch with Mr. Child about registering ,etc.

get registered with the youth hostel international and I will hopefully have that info for you shortly.

As of now the people that I know that are going are, the Child family, Alison Campbell, my daughter Corinne who is grad student and myself. I also think that some of the juniors going to JWOC will be joining us once they know that they are on the team. At the O-Ringen there will be a number of US orienteering so we should really have a great time. The whole trip is going to be a great time and a wonderful experience for all that can go with us.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER JUNIORS THAT WANT TO GO, LET ME KNOW!

If you buy the tickets for (I think) the same flights via here then one return ticket costs USD 827.00. Hope this helps and hope to see you in Sweden!

I'm going to go down to WOC to watch & run the spectator events and then to Oringen...so I'll see you guys at Oringen but won't be there for the first part of the trip. Andy, Anna, & maybe Tori are also going to WOC & then Oringen. I'm not sure what other juniors are planning.

Hey Juniors if you have not yet told me that you are giving serious consideration and/or definitely planning on going on the junior trip or part of the trip, you need to do so as soon as possible. I'm trying to make arrangements for rental vans and the training camp in Karlstad and it would really be much easier if I have some idea of the number of people I am planning for. I have heard from Holly, Anna, Nate and Alison and know what they are thinking. I have not heard from Andy and Huwstradling(and I sent you a personal email did you get it). I'm very flexible and open to people doing their own thing if they so desire, I just need to know who and when you will be with me and the rest of the group.

More information that I have gotten since my last posting about costs. Training camp cost are: about $40 to participate in the OK Tyr (Tom's O Club) Mini 5-Days which is 5 evening of orienteering on courses set up by the club juniors and there are 5 courses to choose from.(remember that is does not really get dark in Sweden at this time of year so it won't be Night orienteering) There will be no charge for the training activities that Tom will set up for us in the mornings. The club is providing the maps and set-up free of charge and Tom hopes that some of the youth/juniors from the club will join us in these training activites, so we need to make sure that we come up with a neat gift to give them for our appreciation. We have two options for places to stay while in Karlstad. Tom has made reservations at a youth hostel that will cost about $30 a night (for 5 nights or about $150.00) or we could stay at the club cabin for free. The hostel has beds; the cabin will be mattresses on the floor. At either of these places we will have to make our own meals at about $15 a day per person(5 x $15 is $75). So I need to know your feelings on whether we should stay at the hostel or the cabin and if the difference in the cost would make a difference in your ability to come on the trip.

In order to stay at youth hostels you need to get a membership which is free if you are 18 or younger. If you are 19 or older it is $28 for a year membership and you can join on line by going the www.yhiusa.org.

Like Alison said, this is going to be a great trip and lots of fun. So please get in touch with me and let me know your thoughts/plans about going.

Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you. When getting your passport pictures done please get two extra pictures to bring with you. If you alsready have your passport, please have 2 extra passport pictures take to bring. Why you ask, because if your passport is lost or stolen you will need 2 passport pictures, a photocopy of your passport and a copy of your birth certificate to have a new passport issued at the American embassy. Of course these item need to be kept in a different part of your luggage from your passport so that you don't lose it all.

Janet do you have a guess of how much the whole trip might cost?

Alison I trying to get it all together ~ things are finally starting to gel so to speak so ~ get your pen and paper and start adding them up.

airfare $900 - 1,000
first night hostel $30
food first day $20
training camp $300 - to stay in hostel
$150 to stay in club cabin
Fin 5 $450 - 500 for the week
WOC spectator ? the Kuestner group could help you with this as that is their plan
Sightseeing with me (from the 12 to the 19)
2 nights in Gothenberg - hostel $60
Bromilli no cost for lodging
on night hostel from Bromilli to O-Ringen $30
Food for this week $140
O-Ringen - lodging $70
bus pass $20
event fees $70 ( age 16 < )
$125 (age 17-20)
$170 ( over 21)
food for the week $150
Stockholm last day and night $50 -hostel & food

Hopefully there will be no cost for transportation as I'm applying for a junior grant to cover the cost of the 9 passenger van I hope to rent and the gas for the entire trip. Also I have used $20 a day to figure the food cost and $30/night for hostels and these are estimates and all estimates I have go high rather than low.

So Alison I come up with about $1,800 for you provided we stay at the club cabin in Karstad and you go sightseeing with me and that you are 16 or younger which I think you are. Also this does not include any cost for extras likes entry fees to musuems, etc. This at least gives you a start on the cost and a good bid of it will be paid over the spring here as it comes dues so that you won't have to come up with all of it at one time.

I hope this helps any other juniors that want to go along. Also if you are not a junior but want to join the group, you are welcome provided I have enough room in the van. Everywhere elsd it won't matter on the numbers

Thank you so much Janet this helps a lot!!!
sadly though in orienteering age i'm 17 even though i only just turned 16 in December (silly December birthdays) but it didn't seem to be that much more than what you figured out when i calculated it for the same thing but for a 17 year old.
thanks so much for doing all of this! I'm looking forward to the trip a lot!

Don't feel so bad Alison, Mr.P and myself both have December birthdays. Mine is the 9th and Mr. P's is the 29th. When Ryan was orienteering regularly his birthday was Nov. 17 which isn't much better. At least for me this year 2008 is a change in A class so I don't mind so much as it moves me into Brown.
