Is there a start times list for Stage 3 at Cal Poly?

Spike:
Is control 3 on top of something or underneath? I haven't run with the new standard very much and I can't figure it out.

MishaB:
Spike it was on top of a balcony. There are stairs leading up to it from the west side.

Can you tell that the control is on top from the map? I can picture the area. But I can’t tell from the map if it is above or below.

MishaB:
If you look carefully that balcony area is shaded in diagonally striped with white and light brown for paved area. According to the new specifications this means that the level with the balcony is above another level. Therefore, when we look at the description where it states that the control is located at the inside corner of the impassible wall, we can assume it is on the higher level. However, I believe that the control description is slightly incorrect, it has to clarify which level the control is on in column C of the control description with the ‘higher level’ symbol.

Yes, MishaB, that would have helped, although the bystanders telling me that "it's up there" helped more.

How do you conclude that there's an uncrossable wall on the upper level but not the lower? Couldn't there be uncrossable walls on both levels?

MishaB:
When there are two levels, only the top level is mapped. The bottom level is diagonally striped with white and the color of the area on the first floor.

Pink Socks:
As mapped, it indicates 2 levels of impassable wall, because the sharkteeth symbol is used only sparingly in the middle, but the diagonal area symbol extends to the whole balcony area.

This indicates that you could go under the balcony where the sharkteeth are, immediately look to your right, and there would be an inside-corner of the wall underneath the balcony, where there could conceivably be a control flag.

If the entire upper level balcony was passable underneath, then the entire wall would be shown with the sharkteeth (and not a thick black line).

Right, that's exactly what I was thinking.

Spike:
I read it the same way as Pink Socks. That was why I wasn't sure where the marker sat. If I were actually running the course, I think I'd go under and take a look to see if it was under before I ran up the stairs. I don't use control descriptions very much, so I wasn't really sure if the description helped or not.

I thought "top of stairs" might help as a description because looking towards the checkpoint circle you'll see stairs,

and the unit was hung at the end of the rail at the very top of the stairs.

Exactly, specifying which level the control is on in the control description would’ve helped a lot.

Not placing controls where there are two mapped levels would help the most. You should be able to tell where a control is by reading the map, and I think that should be at least guideline if not a rule.
