Discussion: Marmot O-Cup NRE cancelled

Permits for use of Fisk State Park in 2023 have been denied due to archaeological & tribal reviews being incomplete at this time.

The Marmot O-Cup will proceed with the Fisk SP events being replaced by non-NRE events (likely middle & long) at Fishtrap Lake.

Cascade Orienteering Club is tentatively planning for two NRE events at Fisk State Park in June of 2024. Stay tuned.

So sad to hear this, I hope things get worked out.

Darn, thought I had a great chance for first place amongst all QOC members at a NRE.... out of 1. Will still be fun to do my first orienteering events in the state I grew up in. Plus been waiting almost 30 years to eat at Wolffy's again.

First, I am not criticizing and wasn’t planning to attend anyway, but I would be curious if you’re willing to share: if your backup venue was Fishtrap Lake, why not simply have the new courses there still be NRE days? Having directed many events (and having had to deal with many late changes, including changes of venue), I’m merely curious - with more than a month until the meet, what obstacles did you find insurmountable in simply moving the NRE to Fishtrap?

Mike, there are really logistical reasons (far away), coupled with available time for the course designer (already spent weeks of travel preparing for the other venue), coupled with NRE requirements and things that make it a bit more difficult, and then coupled with the same people trying to do this are also putting on other events and are tied up. It just didn’t seem feasible with all the mounting difficulties piled on top of each other. It is a bummer, but trying to just move the event might have killed a few folks:).

Archaeoligical review? All the photos I saw of that beautiful area were of rock plains and outcrops. Where are the archaeologists finding to dig?

If there is a silver lining to this perhaps it is that a championship level event some time in the future may find a home at Fisk State Park.

Just confirming that we will have a Long distance event at Fishtrap Lake on Sat June 24 and a Middle distance on Sun June 25. Five courses each day. The course designers are Peter Golde and Dave Tallent so they will be fabulous! EWOC will also have events on June 22 and 23.
We have applied for a permit for 2024.
