Hi friends!
I'm considering presenting workshops about orienteering at a couple of upcoming Experiential Education conferences, and am looking for (a) co-presenters, (b) remote mappers to prepare a map so I could get the attendees out on a team Score-O.
The goals would be to encourage EE folks to use orienteering, and to lower the barriers to entry in their minds about doing so. Eg, how would they get a map made? (Reach out to OUSA for help/advice/Youth Mapping Program). What activities could they do?
I would also talk about the Navigation Games curriculum for kids.
Any interest? Deadlines for applying are coming up in a few days to a week.

  1. AEE West Coast - Santa Cruz, March 3-5 (UCSC campus)
  2. AEE Heartland Region - Camp Courageous, Monticello IA, April 14-16 (this conflicts with the West Point NRE)

I'd love to have someone(s) from a California club join me in Santa Cruz. And someone from IL/MN/WI/KS...
Thanks!

Barb, as you may know, I'm working on mapper education. If there's a way I may be able to help/support please reach out!

Thanks to material available from federal agencies such as NOAA and USGS, D-I-Y orienteering mapping is easier than ever

It is also easier than ever for interested volunteers to make maps remotely for not quite everywhere but close to it. For instance USGS National Map Viewer has recent LiDAR of the Camp Courageous grounds available for download as .las files. NOAA has the UCSC campus similarly available.

BAOC does not have a map of the UCSC campus, although I've often thought about it. We do have a map of Wilder Ranch State Park, which is adjacent to it. I'm not sure you could get a permit in time and it would probably be expensive.
Our experienced mappers don't live very close to Santa Cruz, but maybe someone could field-check a remotely made map..

BAOC hasn't found a need to make an orienteering map of UCSC? Wow! You must be flooded (Oops, poor choice of words) with orienteering terrain in that area. Between the college campuses, the fields between them and the forest around them that university seems to have it all.

Thanks for the info. Jeff, we have a non-orienteering map of the part of UCSC campus that we'll be on, from the conference organizers, and can always use that in a pinch. It will get the idea across. Would anyone from BAOC like to join me at that conference in March? Today is the deadline for submission of an application, so I'm going to go ahead and submit something.
