So far there are only 19 varsity-ISV (girls and boys combined) and 17 JV-ISJV (boys and girls combined) signed up according to my quick look. Thats a bit off a bummer of a turnout. I was hoping for about 50 - 70 deep in each of them (pipe dream obviously). Hopefully some late-comers sign up shortly or I am missing a few in my count somehow:)

soonerjcb: you see the glass as 75% empty. I see it as 25% full.
Sure there are not many entries as you or I would like to see in either the scholastic or the intercollegite classes.
However to me there are some encouraging signs.
A club with the reputation of OCinn has been willing to attach the JrNats to their event.
There will be scholastic representation from across the country.
The teams from West Point will have a challenge for Intercollegiate supremacy. That doesn't always happen.
There are 'lone wolf' participants in the ICVF/M classes from some of the top universities in the States. (when I saw one of the names and the university I contacted the local club, a recent startup, to tell them they should look up this student, a member of a club from another state. They said yes, we know her. She designed our website.)
Now if these lone wolves would each recruit a couple of school friends to try orienteering and come to the nationals I bet it would be a fun weekend.
But how do the Junior Nationals become THE EVENT that school, college and university orienteering teams want to attend every year? I do not think the answer rests with whatever club happens to be putting on the Junior Nationals in any particular year but rests with the national federation creating an attractive brand for the event, including a website template that can be forwarded each year to the next host. (BTW who will be the 2023 hosts?) But given OUSA's recent failed attempt to get its head around marketing I have very little confidence that can happen.

Haha. I agree with all your points:) OCIN seems to do everything wonderfully. You are also correct in determining that I am also a "never enough" kind of guy. If I see a dollar, I want 2!

How do things get bigger or better? That I don't really know except to add enthusiasm and support all clubs, members, and participants. I just wish all of the kids across the US who do orienteering could somehow make it to the "Super Bowl" event. I'm definitely not trying to disparage anyone or anything.

We are missing a lot of navy JROTC this year. One reason is the schools in the southeast were heavily represented at Navy Nationals a couple weeks ago near San Jose. They spent big bucks and and missed a day or three of school to go to their Navy Championships and many that would normally also do the OUSA Junior Nats just don't have the money or ability to miss more school days on another big trip.

I think also the uncertainty of two years of covid restrictions and lost practice has cost a lot of the school teams.

We definitely appreciate any suggestions and anything you can do to spread the word and encourage others to come.

Anybody know any Air Force JROTC units? We have two beautiful Air Force JROTC traveling trophies and so far no contending teams.
