Discussion: Mysterious RouteGadget Error

I have attempted to upload my Georgia O-fest .gpx routes to *Routegadget 2* (clarification per Jagge - thank you) and am met with the following error:
"GPS FIle problem - your GPS file does not match the map coordinates. Please check you have selected the correct file."

I have indeed verified that I selected the correct file, and each of my three days' files uploads to GE without complaint. I've not previously encountered this RG problem with my watch, a Suunto Ambit3 Run.

I examined the .gpx file in Excel and saw that it was written across in a row instead of a column, but processing it into a column and properly re-saving resulted in the same error message in RG.

The file is in lat/lon and the values are reasonable.

Have you encountered this, and if so, could you please share your solution?

I dont think (at latest not he latest versions) RouteGadget gives such error. There is no such requirement of gps track having to match map coordiantes. It will just be positioned outside the map image or positioned by split times if that positioning is used.

Edit. Right, RouteGadget 2 is used there, so not RouteGadget. Those are entirely different apps, just name borrowed. Thats why that error message sounded so stange to me.

I suppose this problem was created when both days PPEN files were created on the whole Pine Mountain map but the base maps for printing were cut out to isolate those parts of the map being used. The GIF and GFW files created by PPEN related to the section of the cutout map but the basic georeferencing in the XML file still related to the whole Pine Mountain map. We had to manually drag the course controls when loading into RG2. The maps are georeferenced properly as a GARMIN GPX file loads correctly.
Using " Autofit" with a GPX file seems to work however. Hope this helps

Thank you for looking into this, Bill. While I am able to click Autofit after I get the error message, doing so has no effect that I can see.

If you open your gpx file google earth, will it display the track correctly?

@Jagge - yes, the positions of all three of my tracks look very good when imported to GE. Per a separate suggestion from CoZ, I'm working on converting my Suunto's .gpx file to 'tracks' and seeing if that will work. I'm also looking into changing the format, XML version (anything I can get my hands on...) of my Suunto's output to see if that will be Routegadget 2-friendly. In the meantime, I've ordered a new Garmin. :-)

It appears RG2 is sensitive to the XML schema for GPS track data.

I've identified the likely problem - A separate suggestion by CoZ Ied me into the weeds of my .gpx file. I pulled up an old .gpx fiie from when I used a Garmin, figuring I could use it as a model to guide me toward what to hack in my Suunto GPX file and what did I find?

My Suunto-generated GPX file has no 2015-04-11T20:09:52Z elements!

Obviously that won't work in RG2 for the intended purpose. 1 demerit to the developer who coded-in the misleading error message.

Back to seeing what my data export options are with Suunto...

I use Garmin and don't know how the Suunto works, but if you can pull off the original activity file directly from the watch you can run it through gpsbabel. I can't imagine the original file as recorded on the watch wouldn't have timestamp data, so it seems those are getting stripped somewhere in your transfer process.

I'm not a Suunto user, so cannot verify or test any of this, but: did you download / export from Suunto App "Routes"? Generally "routes" have no timestamp data, because they are just Routes (where did you go), not Activities (where and when).

Or describe your process ("Suunto-generated GPX file" creation steps) in a bit more detail, and perhaps we can get to the bottom of this. Other Suunto users may be able to guide you with the steps to get a properly-timestamped GPX file for use with RG/RG2.

I'm fairly sure that if you link your Suunto App account here on AP, you'll then be able to download from AP useful-for-RG/RG2 GPX files.

It's been a while (Older Dash '19) since I've used the Suunto process to export a file for upload to RG2, and clearly I determinedly clicked the wrong thing.

It hadn't occurred to me that GA O-fest 2022 was a "workout" and not a "route," :-) nor that there would be any reason to exclude the timestamp from whatever the output is called. To my credit, Suunto's doc'n has little or nothing to say about the differences between a workout and a route, and even basic instrux on how to download a .gpx file are hard to find.

@cmorse - Thanks - Suunto doesn't let you (at least not me) directly connect to the watch. I'm hoping that my new Garmin will, as did my pre-Suunto Garmin.

With my Garmin FR235, I can mount it as 'drive' via USB and pull the FIT files directly from the appropriate activity folder on the watch. Usually I just let Garmin Connect and AP handle the transfer via bluetooth, but sometimes I have reasons for doing it manually. I would suspect all newer Garmin's will connect in the same fashion if required.
