Discussion: Log hits

This new part of the metrics, will it count all log hits ever or just over the past year?

On my log it says "... hits since 1/24/05" so I'd assume it's cumulative since then. And it doesn't include visits by you to your own log.

Hmm, I can't do anything about the seniority aspect so I guess I'll have to create a second AP account... ;)

hey Bill, we can try messing with each others' stats... bubo was already trying to get ahead of Jagge on the comments component which cracked me right up.... we could....lessee, visit each other's log hundreds of times (or, um, tens of times until I lose track of my attention span ;-) what else? here, I'll go visit yer log as many times as I can handle it before doing the recycling suddenly becomes irresistable...
OK, I did a set of experiments, & it doesn't seem to update livetime eithor on your log stats visible to me, or in the big list, tried going in & out of your log from various angles, logged out and went back in and out... maybe we'll see a little burp tomorrow or sumthin...maybe..5 or 6 extra hits before I got bored?
This reminds me a bit of how I imagine the Facebook "friends stats" competition thing is. Fascinating but kinda unhealthy....? I will go recycle now to restore my karma a bit.

and deer hits are quadruple!

As usual, PG is already at the top of the Log Hits Rankings, with well over 100 ranking points.

Does it have to be fallen to count? I nearly hit a perfectly upright tree today while reading my map.

My comments in Jagge´s log where intended to add to 'number of comments' and not log hits...

According to BorisGr (in Jagge´s log) - and that may be correct - number of comments refers to comments in the discussion forum and not in 'private logs', so THIS is the real place to go wild if you want to reach 'number of comments fame' ;-)

YukonKing - Re your tries to do something about the statistics: I think these totals are only updated once every 24 hrs.

I'm not so sure that Boris is correct. He may be wrong. Or I may be wrong. But I have 290 posts in the past year, and I don't think I have that many out here in the general discussion area. Or maybe I do, I guess that would be 5.5 posts per week, and that doesn't sound too implausible.

I had to look this up, since I couldn't remember myself... it currently only counts posts in the main forum.

What about fences? I fell trying to get over a few on sunday at the interscholastics. Silly shortness, need a few more inches i think!!! and ran into a few that i didn't notice.

fences count in either of those cases...and standing trees may be worth two points...what's this about deer? I thought I heard rumors of this, but is that for real? actual Orienteer/Deer collisions?

Yes, there was an actual Orienteer/Deer collision (very scary at the time is my understanding) in 2005 at a Night-O in Mendon Ponds Park, which is the site of the 2008 US Relay Champs. We are considering letting some Attack Badgers loose in the park to thin the herd, but we're not sure whether the cure might not be worse than the disease.

Well the leader in log hits has photographic evidence of his encounter with a log. You just have to look far enough back in the archives.

Along with the number of log hits, it would be nice to know how many times each training log has been "favorited." I wonder if another column could be added for this statistic?

As far as I can tell, there is now no way to determine how many A/P'ers, if any, have favorited your log.

Regarding deer: There was also an earlier orienteer/deer collision at an OCIN local meet in the early 90's. No serious injury resulted from that one.

When deer panic, they tend to bolt very fast in a fairly straight line, regardless of any other moving objects in their path (orienteers, cars, etc). This probably worked very well when their biggest enemy was a wolf pack, and a charging deer could bowl over a circling wolf (while slowing or turning could allow the rest of the pack to catch up), but it hasn't served them so well in the automotive age. I always make a point to wave my arms and yell if I see a deer running toward me, and that's usually adequate to divert it, as well as alert other nearby orienteers.

I'm with you. I'm not even very keen on the hits being public for the same reason. Guess I've lost that one, but I think I'd have allies for keeping the favorites thing somewhat private.

The whole concept of "favorites" serves to focus the log hits. I have enough favorites that it is rare for me to sample a log from someone not on the list. Before I figured out favorites I used to sample mostly from logs with a lot of hours. Now I tend to look only at some of the favorites, and particularly those with an engaging looking C next to them. In scanning through my current favorites, I note that one of the more engaging logs only has less than 200 hits, so many people are missing out on that fine entertainment.

Very true. But it is more for the sense that Charlie explored...the thought that all the "action" of interesting discussion is occurring on someone's private log that I don't know about. Knowing the top "favorites" might expand the A/P experience, especially for newbies.

You can at least the top ten "favorites" by logging out and going to the homepage as an anonymous visitor.

In last weekend's Thomass Glen Haffy race in Caledon, Ontario, we had an unusual deer/orienteer incident. A large number of deer got surprised when the M-Elite field thundered over the horizon. The deer ran away in single file, leaping over a fence as they went. The last deer got caught in the fence and fell down. The first orienteer on the scene called out to the others, and a group of animal-loving men pulled the deer out of the fence. It lay there in shock, and there wasn't much they could do, so they continued their race. When we went out to take down the flags, we didn't see it, so I guess the deer just waited for the stampede to end, then headed after his friends.

I'm thinking of it the other way. That there is interesting stuff on logs that are seldom visited, and no one will know if we only look at our favorites (or someone else's favorites).

...which leads to another dreadful list-mania question: which reasons make you favorite a particular log? Because:
1) it's your friend's/ your club mate's / an acquaintance's log
2) it's your best foe's and it motivates you to train harder
3) you like the writing skills
4) you like the particular spirit of the comments (often related with the previous)
5) it's someone with an interesting record in WOC (for example, swisscheese) and you want to compare (or just check how little you do yourself)
6) you often find some interesting training ideas, or a particular interest in someone's log (proximity, volume, or injury-related connection)

Each of my favorites is related to at least one of those (except for #2, probably because I'm too lazy to start foeing)

as someone new to orienteering with a few kids who are interested in orienteering, I look at logs to get an idea of what the best orienteers do for training

Why were log hits added to the metrics now and not years ago?

Someone thought it was a good idea (I forget who), JJ suggested it to Ken, and voila!

My favorites are a combination of friends' logs, well-written/interesting logs, and "inspirational" logs, as in option 5 in simon's post above. There is also one "rival" log on the list for me to compare myself against.
