Discussion: It's a Boy!

Nadim and I will be adopting a little boy this winter. His Russian name is Sergeiy and he lives in Sortavala. That's in the Karelia region, on the shores of Lake Ladoga, very close to the Finnish border. It looks like really good orienteering terrain. :-)
Sergeiy will be one on 1 December. We'll make the first of three trips right around that time, to meet him and officially accept the referral. Then we have to wait at least 6 weeks before we go back for the court hearing, then back one more time a few weeks later to finalize all the paperwork and bring Sergeiy home, probably in early February. Our orienteering schedule might be a bit affected by this life change, at least for a while.

Congratulations! Sorry if you end up missing the Possum Trot, but some things are more important.

With Russian blood and you as parents, I'm sure he'll be running white courses as soon as he can read the control numbers! :)

Congrats!

Terrific news! And clever thinking to have his name spelled differently from team members Sergei and Sergey.

And you probably didn't know the the Russian Team Trials for WOC-93 in the USA were held in Sortavala.

You're right, I didn't know that. Guess I was right that the area looks good for orienteering! My only regret is that we'll be there in the winter (and I'm NOT dragging my x-c skis over for possible ski-o opportunities).

Yeah, but it still means Sergeiy has probably got good orienteering genes. The question is, will you be changing to a family membership for OK or QOC? Or will Sergeiy hook right up with CSU (since he'll end up there anyway)?

I am so happy for you and Nadim. Shadowing on the White course isn't too far away...Mom!

Thats awesome guys!! Congrats! I think we should start numbering our sergeys to keep them straight. And Peter, I believe the correct letters are SVO. By the way Peggy, we also have the cheapest family membership in the mid-atlantic. And we're low on Sergeiys...

Congratulations! This is so wonderful! Besides, as far as places to visit go, I bet this is one of the most beautiful and easiest to get to places from your potential adoption sites list.

All I can say is that I managed to have a kid without missing a Possum Trot.

Terrains are great there. I have never been there, but some of my friends have. I believe I have that old 93 soviet team trial map somewhere.

Terrains are said to be very similar to Ruokolahti - Puumala terrains in Finland (=best o-terrains in Finland), ~ 100 km from Sortavala. Big hills, lot of details, some bare rock, soft ground.

At the moment there is no snow and I think there is quite good changes that there will be no snow at 1st November.

You may miss Possum Trot, but you can compensate it by travelling trough southern Finland. Here is lot of nice new maps and usually no snow at all at a that time of the year. For example these maps are 15 min drive from Helsinki airport (check at least "Husqvarna pika" map). Just fly to Helsinki, hire a car - there is hundreds of maps between Helsinki and Sortavala ;-)

Very cool stuff! We probably won't have a chance to check any of it out on these trips, but it does entice us to go back.
By the way, Sergeiy's name will change (but we haven't agreed on *what* yet); he'll keep Sergeiy as his middle name. :-)

Sortavala maps from 1992 (1, 2); I believe same area as used for the 1993 Russian Trials for the national Team coached by one St. Rachitskiy.

Just keep his name Sergeiy as his main one! It is very good Russian name in all its variations :)

Good luck and lots of patience to all three of you!
