Me too. I contacted USGS and they referred me to TNM. They also told me that there is a problem in v2. I assume your problem is with downloading .laz files? Me too.
I asked if there was going to be a fix or if not do they have a suggested work around.
I think more people asking the same question might get more action.
I sent my inquiry to tnm_help@usgs.gov

I downloaded some Lidar just the other day, but I have not used the download app. HTTP works fine for me. What is the advantage of using their software app for downloading?

What problem are you having? Error? Etc? I'm not having difficulty downloading LAZ from TNM Download v2. Tested on Win10 via Chrome, also via TXT list + wget. I did get a "filename.LAZ can't be downloaded securely" error in Chrome, but could just 'Keep'.

What software app? Who knows?
You go to the National Map Viewer site.
Zero in on the area of interest
Ask for available LiDAR tiles
Select the ones needed and for each one click on Download .LAZ
and badda bing badda boom the LiDAR tile is in your download file ready to be moved to the map file and imported to OCAD 12 or 2020 via the DEM import wizard or if you want to make it tougher for yourself import to an older OCAD version or OOM.
(PS on the way find out what projection system is used for the LiDAR. OCAD will want to know that so they can automatically convert it to the equivalent UTM coordinates if needed.)

Hughmac: the problem I'm having is that when I click on Download .laz nothing happens except the screen goes blank. A brief period of blank is normal as at their end they connect to a server called rockyftp or something like that then the download occurs. But now the connection does not occur and the screen stays blank.
The site that seems to have gone inactive is ftp://rockyftp.cr.usgs.gov/

Yes, that's the way I did it. Worked for me. At one time, there was a "bulk download client" that was a separate application. Seems to be gone now. Which browser are you using to view the National Map site? I was using Firefox.

Seems to be a new-version-of-Chrome issue, as others have mentioned. Mine just started having the same issue. I believe I fixed it by going to chrome://flags (copy/paste into Chrome address bar), searching for FTP, and changing "Enable support for FTP URLs" from Default to Enabled, and restarting Chrome. I was also fiddling with UBlock Origin and Privacy Badger, soo ...

And since FTP from within a browser is/will be going away across the board at some point (supposed to be a year ago in Chrome, but COVID) ... install a dedicated FTP app (I use Cyberduck, but that's not an endorsement), and (this is in Windows 10) Start > Default Apps > scroll to bottom, Choose default apps by protocol. Find FTP and select the App you wish.

I don't really approve of this choice by browser makers: I think forcing separate FTP apps actually opens the door for more potential security issues, as folks try to find legitimate software. Internetting is hard!

Improves security in the sense of, "hey, it wasn't our fault!".
