Wolfmann:
I would like to get into the sport of orienteering and live very close to Maryland's Patapsco Valley State Park where I know that they have a course, but I do not know where the markers are so I was wondering where would I be able to get maps of the courses distributed throughout the park? Is there a website, company, or specific person that I could talk to?

You want to check out the maps of the Quantico Orienteering Club.

We (QOC) have maps of The Avalon/Orange Grove and McKeldin areas of Patapsco Valley State Park and we're also planning on holding an A meet in spring 2009 on new maps of terrain on the other side of the river from McKeldin. However, there are no permanent courses on any of the existing or prospective maps. If you want to try an orienteering course with markers anytime soon, your best bet is one of our local meets (the one at Greenbelt next Sunday can't be all that far away from you) or possibly one of SVO's local meets when they emerge from hibernation.

Actually, there are nine easy (yellow-level) permanent markers at the McKeldin area and they are shown on all versions of the QOC map, although they don't stand out. I believe the park has run out of old maps. Wolfmann can email me directly for more info.

There is also a permanent O-course at Hashawha just north of Westminster MD. I think those maps must be available at that park.

I have printed maps of the permanent course at Hashawha for anyone planning to go there .... I also have GPS locations for the McKeldin permanent markers should that be of interest to adventure racers or others.
