Looking for something to fill the void in your life created by the cancellation of the Australian 3 Day Orienteering Championships? Well look no further, as we bring you the

“Stay At Home! 3 Days”

A series of virtual courses on Runningwild using none other than the actual Australian 3 Days maps (well, except for Day 1 because that’s a new map and we don’t have it, so you will get a surprise map instead).

Each day will have three courses; Elite, Master and Junior. You can do whichever you want (or multiple).
So to kick things off, here are the links to the “Stay At Home! 3 Days” Prologue courses

The Stay At Home! 3 Days continues with a Middle Distance for Day 1.

The planned map for Easter "Noahs Ark Ridge" is a new map and can't be used for RunningWild, so instead we bring you an oldie but a goodie: Kahlis Rocks.

Watch out for the diagonal downhill legs. Make sure you have a good plan and identify good attackpoints. Use BIG features and watch out for climb. Going straight is not always great.

Done thanks Bridget. Lots of fun. Interesting to compare. I generally took softer route choices than you did. It probably reflects my current fitness level. :)

I look forward to tomorrow given I'm the real course setter for the day. I know Gumble very well by now. I'm keen to see how others will choose their routes in that terrain.

Thanks Ecmo. Simon is setting the courses and is trying to see if he can get as close to some control sites as possible. Only you will know until next year :)

Break out the big breakfasts and coffees - its time for today's Long Distance, with Day 2 of the Stay At Home! 3 Days on Gumble Pinnacles.

One of my favourites too - and for those of you who experienced it in the early-mid 2000s, it's even more challenging now because a lot of it is quite low-visibility (or at least it was when I was last there in 2015).
Apr 12, 2020 2:39 AM #
tRicky:
I'm sure in another year I will also be experiencing lower visibility.

I had a bit of trouble when my drag refused to let go of the map and all I could do was click somewhere I didn't want to. May have got caught up in my zimmer frame. But great fun nevertheless

That happened to me in the elite sprint course, hence why a couple of my routes go through buildings or OOB and then back to the spot I just left.

Loved Day 2

Blair, Ricky you are both on the money. I've made a note in my log about what people can expect...

Simon said that when he was setting he struggled to make good medium length legs because it was too easy to go straight. So with Ecmos’s description of the vegetation this will add extra challenge to these legs.

Today the Stay At Home! 3 Days concludes with the final day on Gumble Pinnacles.

This day takes us to the southern Gumble Creek area, which was heavily used in the mid 2000s in the lead up to JWOC 2007. The nostalgia trip is real for those of us who were juniors during those years (looking at you Lizzie).

This section of the map features more rock, more climb, more vegetation, and definitely more chances for error. And to quote SA Junior coach Bridget Uppill: "If you don't go through the saddle, have you even orienteered on Gumble?"

Anyway here are the courses, and thanks to everyone for participating over the weekend.

This was definitely superior to the other 3 days challenge involving exercise: I'll just stick to my base training to build mileage. Thanks to the introduction for me to running wild maybe this will finally solve my navigation issues under pressure?

It's easy to find the control on the electronic map.

Riley: for where you are right now, I think many of your routes on the Long Masters course were too ambitious, and unless you were willing to walk the whole course checking the features off along the way, you could well have come unstuck several times.

Have a look through the Start Running Wild Analysis Session and compare your routes to the following much safer ones, which would have allowed you to use your running speed judiciously, ie with less risk:
Leg 1 - Ian Jessup, Leg 2 Deb D, Leg 3 LostRichard - NB through the saddle just as Biddy said! Legs 4 & 5 Liz and BB0, Leg 6 Liz and simmo, Leg 7 BB0, Leg 8 BB0, tRicky & simmo, Leg 11 chrisfornee (very wide but very fast), but also the left routes on the track, eg Liz & simmo. Leg 12 chrisfornee, Leg 13 frichte, Leg 15 simmo & BB0.

You had two or three good routes (9, 10 and 14), but I think you need to choose safer routes in very complex terrain - even if it means going wide - until you've experienced more of it. Use this time before you get to Junior elite level to consolidate.

I'd be interested to hear what coaches Biddy and Rachel think.

Craig:
I thought all of Riley's routes looked reasonable. There were a couple where I thought he was a little overly conservative but that is good if it makes him more confident. Didn't see any that looked too ambitious as long as he is clear on his intention for each stage of the leg. Most of the alternative route suggestions didn't look any safer to me.

gruver:
I don't know Riley, but I took a loooong time on many legs to sort out a safe route that I thought (90% probability) that I could execute. 0.9 to the power 17, well work it out.
