Discussion: One month to go for early registration

Early registration for the Cal O'Fest 2020 has been extended to Jan 12 so as to give people a little time after the holiday season. Entry fees go up significantly after that.

We already have a couple of dozen entrants from overseas, and we are aware of three tours from Europe that will bring dozens more. Nine days of high quality orienteering in very varied terrain, from one of the U.S.'s most amazing urban parks to deep in a redwood forest to spectacular alpine terrain. Plus there's the World ROGAINE Champs (and a mini-version if you'd rather do just a few hours). You don't want to miss this!

Thank you for the information. I'm sorry if I have missed it but are there any plans to have practice areas set up before NAOC to allow us to get somewhat used to alpine meadow terrain?

NAV-X is having a Map Trek (Score-O) at Donner Summit the Sunday prior to NAOC. That is not far from the NAOC venues, though that terrain has many more rock features (including enormous ones) than any of the NAOC venues. I'm not aware of any other alpine practice opportunities, but I'll inquire.

Thanks for that Dennis. Butt I'm thinking of in the two days before NAOC. I and probably many others will arrive in the Tahoe area 1-3 days before the NAOC. How do we get at least a bit familiar with that terrain and its maps. Are there maps of areas not being used during the NAOC where we can have a run around even if there are no markers?
Or if we wanted to make our own 'quick and dirty' map outside the embargoed areas could the organizers suggest similar parkland?

We won't be using Burton Creek State Park. There used to be permanent courses there, but I don't know if there's much left of them. Maybe we could make the maps available? They'd be over 10 years old though. Burton Creek was used for an event last summer, though. Here's a link to the RouteGadget page.

The developed area on the lower right is North Tahoe High School in Tahoe City. Probably could park there.

That Burton Creek State Park would be an example of the terrain I'm seeking, origamiguy, but are you trying to trick us? It looks as if it's right smack in an embargoed area.

Sorry, I didn't check the embargoed areas. I suppose someone could reach it during the rogaine. It's 8.8km in a straight line from Northstar to the high school. I haven't seen the rogaine map, of course.

The only other areas that have been mapped for orienteering in the area are Boreal Ridge, where the WRC Model will be, and Fallen Leaf Lake, on the South Shore. That has access issues, but a trail run to acclimate wouldn't need a permit.
I don't think any maps from Fallen Leaf are on RouteGadget, though. It's been too long ago.

anyways. not knowing relay start time (on monday)- hard to register now at 33U$/participant vs. 70U$ ( on the day or last month)- especially when i booked flight out of SFO at 4.20 pm hoping that will get enough members from our club to form a team.
is there a time table ( i am particular interested for relay day) ?

i start doing the math for the 6 days i plan to be there, and for the 2 of us- price is ..hmm - quite..oh well- need definitely not to miss the best ( read- cheapest) option

Gordhun, are you basically asking for a model event, which is usually available at all major meets? There are several model events listed in the Bulletin (page 9).

Several model events? I see one on the same day as the sprint. The others happen AFTER the NAOC.
I'm looking for a chance to get acclimatized during the two days before the start of the NAOC.
The San Francisco area events will be great, no doubt. But I've decided to give them a pass and go directly to the Tahoe area.

Oh, you're right; I just saw a few occurrences of the word "model" and didn't pay close attention to the associated events...

Maybe a BAOC person can elaborate on the model listed on 7/24; will it be applicable to the Sprint OR to the Middle & Long forest events? If only the former, are there any plans to make a model map available for the latter?

I'm not on the planning committee, but I would think the terrain in the WRC model area would be equally applicable to both. I don't know if the area would be available before NAOC though.

Seems like it would be a good idea for the model area (wherever it is) to be available in general ahead of time whenever people want, albeit without sample controls, assuming there are no access permission issues.

After looking at that embargo map, I think it would be nice to have further guidance on what lodgings are considered embargoed or not. The embargo area includes a decent amount of Truckee, including a number of hotels. And in the Lake Tahoe area are you only allowed to stay in places on the lake side of the road? How about in Northstar? Or is it ok to book just about anything as long as you stick to the road into your lodging and don't hike around?

Lots of good questions here. Like Jeff (origamiguy), I'm not on the planning committee either, so I will ask some people who are on that committee to come here and address them. FWIW, I will give you my guess at some answers. I've already urged the committee to make maps available for places in the area that aren't being used for the orienteering events, e.g., Burton Creek. As Gord points out, Burton Creek is in an embargoed area, but that's for the rogaine, so if you're not in the WRC, then you go can go to Burton Creek [I was wrong: Burton Creek is fully embargoed to all participants - see below. DW]. As far as lodging, I would think the rule would be that you can take lodging anywhere, you just can't go out with an O-map (at, for instance, Northstar or Little Truckee Summit). But those are guesses on my part; let's see if we can get someone on the planning committee to give more definitive answers.

I have this info from the planning committee:

1. Burton Creek is embargoed to all participants in COF.

2. The committee is working on a list of venues for possible training in the Truckee area. That list will appear soon on the event website, as well as an indication of how to get maps.

3. No restrictions on lodging anywhere in the Truckee area. Exact wording of what is prohibited while you are in the area will also appear on the event website soon.

No worries Dennis and others. If nothing else comes up I have found two areas right on the north side of Truckee where I am hopeful I can learn all that I want to learn about alpine meadow type terrain and perhaps squeeze in a golf game at the same time.

Well, Gord, I can say with certainty that none of the areas I've ever orienteered in in the Lake Tahoe area is anything like a golf course ;-)

BTW, Burton Creek is very different from Little Truckee Summit, and Donner Summit is different from either of those two. Of course, one thing they all have in common is that you'll feel the altitude.
