Has anyone in the orienteering community participated in the Barkley marathon? I've heard theres a little bit of navigation to it.

I can think of at least two who have, though it was a while ago: PG and Fanatic.

Yip, and a Kiwi one at that this year. Greig has been world Rogaine champion

He logs on here periodically as well

I believe a member of GVOC named Gary Robbins has done decent at Barkley. Excellent beard.

There's an interesting thread on AP about the GVOC Mini-Barkley from a few years ago.

Also -- Jason Poole from RMOC, six times.

Jason is mentioned in Barkley articles in Runner's World and Ultrarunning.com.

All mentioned above will no doubt be a great resource for you learning more about Barkley. If you need some info let me know.

BTW the name does not have Ultra, and its plural: Marathons ;)

Was just looking at the BM thread. Guillaume Calmettes is an LAOC member. He completed 3 loops this year.

@Nev-Monster "Gary Robbins has done decent":

Yeah, obviously so, and Barkley is probably the only race in the world where you can fail to finish (sometimes with heartbreakingly close calls) on every attempt and that is still true.

PS. Last year I did try to download all the LiDAR of the area, but the total was just too large (10--200 GB?) that I gave up on making my own map of the area, as an attempt to reverse engineer the course.

Never mind the course, even entering is fiendishly difficult.

As an AR navigator, I have never had trouble with the navigation on the Barkley. Doing 2 laps or more, on the other hand........

I've been.
Greig is useless, got lost and couldn't even find a major stream junction, in daylight.
