I did exactly the same.
I think maybe something to do with the bright sun camouflaging the flag against the holly bush? It didn't help that the flag was grippled to the bush rather than in the middle of the re-entrant.

It wasn't positioned quite where I would have expected in relation to the bush - grippling would explain why it was so close. Still doesn't explain why I went to explore areas north and east of the bush...
