Please express interest if you might attend the following meets presently planned by the Arctic O Club (Alaska): (1) Mountain-O on Sunday, Aug 12, 2018, in the mountains behind Anchorage (likely a long point-to-point format, possibly Score-O); (2) standard foot-O on a recent map on Wednesday evening, Aug 15, 2018, 1/2 north of Anchorage; (3) a short format meet on our fascinating Earthquake Park map in the city of Anchorage sometime between Aug 11 and 14.

possible. The last time I went to Whitehorse, I flew to Anchorage and drove from there. That worked pretty well. The big problem for me is that the kids here will be back in school, so if I manage to figure out any way to take kids out of school long enough to go to NAOC, we won't be able to take extra time in Anchorage.

It's conceivable. How are the mosquitoes then?

Never mind the mosquitoes, how are the bears then? :)

Any chances to orienteer in the time prior to NAOC would be most welcome.

Mosquitos generally not too bad in August. Bears not very likely on the maps we'll be using.

You're more likely to get hurt by a moose than a bear. not worth worrying about.

Mm, maybe it's just that I watched a nature documentary over the holidays with a dramatic scene of a bear taking down a caribou. I'll keep the factoid in mind.

When I was in Alaska for the 1994 US Champs, a fully grown moose crossed the trail about 15m in front of me. Then, at the event banquet, there was a young moose near the parking lot, attracting photographers.

Didn't see any bears...

All I know is that when we took a trip to Alaska this past June, there were signs virtually everywhere (rest stops, trail heads, fairly populated areas, etc.) giving very stern and lengthy warnings about bear dangers!

We would likely come for an event near Anchorage on the 11th or 12th (family of 4). After all, my husband and kids have nicknamed our gap year adventures "The World Orienteering Tour," and I wouldn't want to disappoint by missing an opportunity to O in Alaska! Hoping to visit Wrangell-St. Elias NP on our way down to Whitehorse, so we'll probably be past Anchorage by the 13th.

Ok. Based on feedback and some known schedules, Arctic O Club will likely aim for a regular meet on Wed Aug 8 and a mountain-O on Sunday Aug 12.
