At our meet last evening, we had some difficulties with a runner that arrived with this newer chip+compass combo. I am sharing this even though we have solved the problem (by reading the SI Com Card Pro manual).

To download these cards, even though it would seem sensible to put the embedded card near the hole in the download box, the card reading only works if you put the center of the compass over the hole.

I think that communication between the Com Card and the box happens through a copper? ring that encircles the capsule. So its best if the ring encircles the hole in the box. I think the same applies when the runner "punches" at each control.

Also, it takes much longer to download than it does to just punch, sit the Com Card on the download box for several seconds and it should eventually read.

Thank you both. I found several aborted attempts on the box at event time, where the download might have started and been corrupted. Aligned correctly, they connect pretty promptly.

Related topic. The picture doesn't show the compass hand holding and "thumbing" the map. You can "punch" without releasing your hold on the map, but I found its hard to position it quickly.
