Hey everybody, we just had our first open-invitation meet in Black Mountain, NC last weekend and it was a hoot! WNCOC is a baby club based in Asheville.
It was our ninth meet, actually, but the first one we invited everybody through our newly minted FB Page (http://Facebook.com/WNCOC) -- we had 10 participants, including a toddler in a stroller and 3 total newbies to orienteering.
I made a montage (even Rocky had a montage) video using GoPro footage and that snazzy RGMapVideo script -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBobNRz_Qs0

We all chose from 3 courses (white, orange, green) and then all did a 60 minute score-o course.

Most of our goings-on have not involved controls at all, but using only the Android app GPS Orienteering and karttapullautin maps run through OOM and Purple Pen. 100% free orienteering, not counting the one-time app fee of $3.99.

Keeping half an interested eye on this, it being not impossible that life might take me in the direction of Asheville at some point in the future (our office's US equivalent is based there). From what I've seen on my previous visits, being able to go up, down and across hills would be a definite advantage.
