Cambridge Sports Union invites you to Round 2 of the 2003 North American
Intercity Orienteering Challenge, to be held at Pawtuckaway State Park,
Raymond, New Hampshire over the Labor Day Weekend: August 30 - September 1
2003.

This is a weekend of high-quality orienteering racing for orienteers on
the Red and Blue-level courses, incorporating an individual match racing
challenge on Saturday afternoon, a classic distance race on Sunday
morning, and a relay on Monday morning. Besides the relay, there will not be
any courses shorter than red level offered.

In addition to the individual competition,
there will also be a city-based point score competition, with teams from
Boston, New York, Philadelphia, the Bay Area and Hamilton ON expected to
be among those challenging for the title won by Hamilton at Round 1 held
at the US team trials hosted by New York in May (results and pictures are
at http://us-o-team.us.orienteering.org/events/2003/T...). Round
3 will be hosted by Hamilton over the Columbus Day/Canadian Thanksgiving
weekend in October (http://www.dontgetlost.ca/gho/glof.html)

The suggested accommodation for the event is camping at Pawtuckaway State
Park. As of Monday 14 July, 60 of Pawtuckaway's 171 reservable sites
remained available, so if you wish to camp, you should reserve one as a
matter of urgency. (Information and online reservations are available at
http://www.nhparks.state.nh.us/ParksPages/Pawtucka..., or
call 603-271-3628).

Saturday Aug 30: CSU Match Racing Challenge
5 courses of around 1.5km (men) or 1.25km (women) of exciting
head-to-head sudden-death elimination orienteering racing

Here's how it works in each division (M/W)

Round 1 (Qualifying): Mass start of all competitors. First 16 to finish
qualify for Divison A of the remaining rounds, next 16 for Division B,
next 16 (if we're lucky enough to get so many competitors) for Division C,
... For the remaining rounds, we'll concentrate on how division A works -
the other divisions are the same (but with less glory!)

Now comes the match racing. In each of the remaining rounds, the racing is
one-on-one. It's just you and your opponent out there in the woods,
running the same course. It's sudden death. You start together, and first
across the line wins - second place (that's last) is eliminated. Do you
follow? Do you try to lose your opponent in the low visibility forest? Do
you take it out hard and try to lose them in the beginning, or will it be
a sprint to the line? Tactics, tactics... just don't get overtaken!

Round 2 (Round of 16): 8 matches, determined by placings from Round 1:
2.1 1st vs 16th
2.2 2nd vs 15th
...
2.8 8th vs 9th

Round 3 (Quarter Finals): 4 matches between Round 2 winners
3.1 Winner of 2.1 vs Winner of 2.8
3.2 Winner of 2.2 vs Winner of 2.7
3.3 Winner of 2.3 vs Winner of 2.6
3.4 Winner of 2.4 vs Winner of 2.5

Round 4 (Semi Finals): 2 matches between Round 3 winners
4.1 Winner of 3.1 vs Winner of 3.4
4.2 Winner of 3.2 vs Winner of 3.3

Round 5 (Final): 1 match, winner takes all
5.1 Winner of 4.1 vs Winner of 4.2

This should be exciting racing, with great spectating for those eliminated
(they also get to run less to save themselves for the classic tomorrow)!
We will likely be using an area in the northwestern part of Pawtuckaway,
which has been less used for orienteering than areas nearer the parking
areas. There will probably be around a 1-2km walk from the parking to the
start to allow us to use this.

Sunday August 31: Pawtuckaway Classic Challenge
Standard Classic Race (on the long side)
90 and 70 minute target winning times for Blue and Red respectively.

Monday September 1: Intercity Relay
Mass Start at 10am
3 Legs: Brown, Green, Red Legs run in any order. (all courses are on the short
side) at least one member of the team has to be a female or a male 50 and older
or a junior 17 and younger.

This is not an A-meet, though we plan to seek ranking status for the classic
distance. All events pending final approval from the park authority.
