Excellent writeup on the Camping Weekend canoe-O, including route analysis, by Joel Gould - Canoe-O Organizer.

Thanks Jim, that's a great site with excellent route choice analysis and pictures of all the competitors! Even if people aren't into canoe-O, it's worth a look!

For my own information, on #12, how much slower would it have been to cut to the inside of the island with the boat (I'm looking at JJ's route) and send someone across on land to get the control.

Hard to say. I can't remember whether that island is green or not. On a short stretch like this, you also have to consider the time lost to getting in and out of the boat. When I got out at #10, we had to land to punch anyway. And because these are ribbons hung from the water, it can be hard to spot them from the land side. Having two pairs of eyes looking helps as well. But it's possible running across the island would have been faster.

I will note that on a previous canoe-O on this lake, Aims decided to make a move that would have been the equivalent of dropping me off at #10 and meeting me at the SW corner of the island, so I had to cross the straits on foot to get #12. My recollection is that it's chest deep if you keep your eyes open for the convenient subsurface boulders.

On the other hand, Jeff's suggestion would have had another benefit. Leaving #12, we went aground hard on a boulder that Aims couldn't see, and that I didn't manage to steer us away from. Ouch.
