The suicide bombing today was near the Hagia Sofia and Blue Mosque, apparently at the site of #5 on the night-o course I ran this spring. How horrible for Istanbul.

That is such a beautiful area in the city. It would be a great loss for the city, country, and the world for those sites and the people living in those areas to be harmed in such a way. I was last there in 2009.

So sad. One of the most spectacular and special areas on the planet, and I hope everyone reading this (and everyone else, of course), has the opportunity to enjoy it peace once in their lifetime, as I was fortunate to. The views from my hotel when I was there are the same as those in some of the vids.

Moreover, the local orienteering community is extremely supportive of "orienteering tourists", as I was at the time. I imagine they still are and still would be.

My thoughts go out to everyone affected.

(All I can say, and not to get too political here, lesson learned on electing feckless leaders in the Jimmy Carter mold. Don't keep doing it).

What you are saying is to vote for the likes of G W Bush who bombed the shit out of people for the hell of it on made up fiction and got us in this mess. Then of course you can continue that mold with Donald Trump!
It is ironic that Jimmy Carter has done more for world peace than any other President/ex President since WW2.

Bringing the discussion back to Istanbul...

...anyone know any links to O events in Istanbul? Family and I are going in mid-March.

This is the Istanbul Orienteering Group website. English translation page is a bit shaky. They say they have a training activity every Sunday at Belgrade Forest, not far out of the city. The only actual event seems to be the 5 days in November. Last March they put on a 3 day in connection with the Park World Tour trip.
