Sunderland, Ma. (Orienteering Press) -- In an unexpected development that caught weather forecasters flatfooted, what had been forecast as a typically gray, early autumnal day with possible drizzle for the Pioneer Valley instead transitioned into an especially violent downpour that left as much as 5' of water in places.

"Our models completely missed it, maybe we were drinking coffee or something," said one forecaster, speaking off the record.

Mike Wiseman of Warner Farm, which in recent years has been the site of the incredibly popular World Corn Maze Orienteering Championships, said of his cornfields after the storm subsided: "The damage is incredible. There's not more than two or three cornstalks left. The soil's all gone. I guess we'll have to transition to some kind of an aggregate operation. We certainly won't be farming corn anymore."

When contacted for comments about what would happen with the 2016 World Corn Maze Orienteering Championships, the World Corn Maze Orienteering Supreme Executive Director Peter "Peegee" Gagarin" said: "I don't know, we're still trying to take in the magnitude of this devastating development. I always said if worst came to worst, we could always move the Championship to Kansas--they have lots of corn there. But of course I was only joking; Kansas is far too flat for a championship quality corn maze. So I just don't know. On the bright side though, ever since the rain, my back has been feeling better!"

Fortunately, the US Corn Maze Orienteering Champs may still be proceeding as usual.

There will be a Corn Maze score-O in Rochester NY on 10/10. It's a local event, but it will be fun.

And then stay to do the 'maize' normally, or enjoy fall goodies.
