Toronto Orienteering Club puts out ribbons for courses in a Toronto urban park on Wednesday evenings during the summer. A public transit bus goes to the entrance of the park being used on July 29th. It's a decent park, expect some big climbs (the park includes a ski hill). From the TOC website: "New, for TOC members only: If you find you can’t attend the Wednesday meet, but would like to run the course, send an email to the event coordinator. We’ll provide you with a PDF of the map that you can print to run at your convenience." Although it says for TOC members, as a visiting foreign orienteer, I would suggest emailing the Wed. coordinator about being able to do the same, although the week's map might not be ready for printing before Wednesday night.

You asked about Buffalo and Toronto so I didn't think of it, but ROC has several permanent courses in the Rochester area: http://roc.us.orienteering.org/permanent.shtml

Two of the areas (Mendon and Letchworth) are embargoed for WDOC, but the Durand and Webster courses would be available.

Half way between Toronto and Buffalo is Hamilton and the fantastic Dundas Valley complex of maps. It is pretty close in terrain type to Letchworth .

There is/was a map over Brock University and the Niagara escarpment woods around it but I'm not sure it has ever been used in the last 20 years.

I would have posted earlier about the Dundas Valley if it was an option but we arent allowed to orienteer there from May to August.

Not allowed to even train, or not allowed to hold events or other organized activities involving large numbers (eg, ARK)?

If the former, do they consider orienteering to be any off trail use -- with or without a map?

May to August? I can see May to early June during bird nesting season, when the new plant growth is at its most fragile and when the forest is wet but what is the rationale for closing the park to orienteering in July and August?
Oh well. It could be worse. It could be in Quebec.
