CSU is excited to open registration for the inaugural Boston Sprint Camp!
Registration will be limited to 60 participants.

What is Boston Sprint Camp, and why should you be there?
- 3 days of training events
- 3 timed SI races
- 2 OUSA-sanctioned races
- Lunch from local hotspots
- All venues accessible via public transit

The inaugural Boston Sprint camp is offering four days of training and racing in Newton, Cambridge, and Boston, with training events in the morning and timed races in the evening, designed by Junior National Team coach Erin Schirm. Lunch is included for three of the four days, featuring local and delicious eateries. All venues are accessible via public transit, eliminating the need for a rental car.

The final day features two OUSA sanctioned sprints at the historic Boston Common: Qualifier and Final. The qualifier will count as an OUSA ranking participation day, and the Final will provide full ranking points. The Qualifier will be run as heats, and used for seeding in the Final.

Don't forget to update your Facebook page with the link, too.

It should already have it. Are you having trouble finding it?

JanetT:
I posted the EventReg link in response to a question on the CSU page, but the Facebook Boston Sprint Camp event page refers to "registration opening on May 1st" but does not give a link.

Oh, the announcement has the link. You have to expand the comment.

What I love about this event is that it is a dream come true. I have heard Ed talking about this sprint camp idea for some time. He and Alex have all sorts of ideas about how to make it fun and build community. It's great that they got Erin to set up the training exercises. As far as I can tell, the sprint camps that have taken place elsewhere have been really successful. It's fun to bring it to Boston.

Ed has said he'd like to see it become a tradition. There are so many good areas around Boston for future years. I know that the North End, when it happens, will be a highlight. And Bunker Hill, and the Ride of Paul Revere; Lexington and Concord. Lowell: The mill town and home of Jack Kerouac. So many universities... The Frederick Law Olmstead sampler. The Transcendental year, around Walden and related. Haunts of Malcolm X. The Harbor Islands. Plimoth and the pilgrims. What a great couple of decades coming up!

It doesn't look like it'll be an issue, but just in case, Will Enger is coming (he already bought airfare), but he's competing in Canada this weekend, so I don't know if he'll be able to officially register until Monday. I don't want the 60 spots to fill up before he gets a chance to register.

OK, I'll save him a spot.

I'm considering going. Any recommendations on places to stay or at least areas to look for accommodation in?

There are a couple of listings on Airbnb. Haven't checked VRBO or searched for hotels, but let us know what you find. NEOC or CSU members might be willing to host people.

The public transit options are best if you stay somewhere in cambridge or Boston; most trains and buses fan out from the center but it can be tougher to go north-south. Three of the days are quite central!

How inconvenient would it be to drive to/from the events?
May 21, 2015 2:49 PM #
acjospe:
You'll be fine driving to the events, though you may have to pay for parking. There's a parking garage directly underneath the Boston Common map for Sunday; everywhere else I think you'd probably be able to find on-street parking.

Driving to all the events is fine. On thursday there is only street parking. On Friday and Saturday there are parking lots at the parks, and on Sunday as Alex said, there is a parking garage directly under the map.

If you are traveling and would rather not drive, we will be including transit directions in the meet packets. The T is free if you get on the silver line at the airport and stay within the subway. We recommend that you take the silver line from the airport to south station where you can purchase a one week pass for the T.

We've finalized the list of maps for sprint camp, both from our existing collection of ISSOM sprint maps and some new ones. Each day is clustered geographically around a town. Here's the final list!

Thursday
Two new maps!
1. Cabot Park: a neighborhood park in Newton, nearly contiguous with Edmands, that features baseball fields, tennis courts, and a dog walking area. ISSOM 1:4000, 2015 Ed Despard.
2. Edmands Park: A large wooded park nestled in the neighborhoods of Newton, that backs up to the Boston College Law School. The glacial topography provides interesting and challenging navigation. ISSOM 1:4000 2014-15 Ed Despard

Friday
1. Magazine Beach: part of large Charles River basin park network and map. The map is a piece of parkland along the river, and includes a street-o section through the quaint neighborhood of Cambridgeport. ISSOM 1:4000, 2013, updated street-o 2015 Ed Despard
2. Danehy Park: another town park featuring tiered sports field and a track, along with landscaped park features. The main route choice problems revolve around fences and topographic relief. John Campbell 2006, updated to ISSOM Ed Despard 2012.

Saturday
Franklin Park all day.
Franklin Park is a Frederick Law Olmstead-designed park, site of the 2011 US Sprint Championships. We’ve improved and expanded the map since then, and will be using the full extent of this forested sprint map. The outcrops of Roxbury Conglomerate, locally known as puddingstone, create interesting rock features for you geology and orienteering nerds alike. Ian Webb 2011, Ed Despard 2011-2015, 1:5000 ISSOM.

Sunday
Boston Common, both races.
Sunday features an OUSA-Sanctioned qualifier and final sprint in the center of downtown Boston, at Boston Common. This is the oldest city park in the United States! The terrain consists of gentle rolling hills, the “frog pond”, and lots of history. Explore the adjacent public garden off the clock.

I'm sad I have to miss this. The schedule and extras all look amazing and there is a built in guarantee of quality because Alex and Ed are playing such a big role in the hosting of it. Will there be a next time?
Jun 4, 2015 7:27 PM #
acjospe:
Definitely! We're hoping to make it an annual thing, but of course, two people can't guarantee anything over the long run.

Last chance to register is today! Registration closes at 8pm, so if you've been delaying, get it done. We've got a great camp lined up for you, I don't think you want to miss this.

You say that you will be including transit directions in the meet packets. Where does one pick-up the meet packet and/or will you be posting those directions on line?

BP:
Carl, there was a "mass" mail from Barb to participants with that info. Maybe the organizers can repost here.

We will have all the packets at the first venue that will contain detailed info, and later today I will be posting the same program guide online. The first venue is Newton Highlands Playground, in Newton on Thursday morning.
