Hi All,
The Juniors on the National Team are challenging themselves to see how many orienteering controls they can navigate to between the dates of 5/15/15 -6/15/15 in preparation for racing this summer at JWOC and other international competitions. In order to provide some encouragement I created a fundraiser that goes as follows:
Any time during the above dates you can pledge your support for a specific athlete/s that you would like to encourage. At the end of the time period you donate $2 for every orienteering control your sponsored athlete visits in training and racing. To pledge your support for an athlete please email me at erinschirm@gmail.com. I will be keeping track of control count and keep athlete sponsors updated. When you email me you can set a limit for your donation. For example if your max donation is $30 once the junior navigates to 15 controls you would be off the hook for any more controls during the time period.
Many of you have already donated or helped out and we greatly appreciate your support. If you can't donate please spread the word. For the Training Camp before JWOC its about $1000 per athlete beyond what JTESC has money to pay for. For Switzerland and Sweden athletes are looking at costs of at least $1500-2000. These juniors are seriously trying to get better and need your support. I have attached the official flyer below. If you would like a couple copies please email me and I can send you the PDF. Thanks for all your time and support!!

Hmm, maybe time for another one of those 100+ control events. (I remember being part of a record-setting event near Larvik, Norway a decade ago, but it was quickly eclipsed by other events with even more controls. It was actually an interesting experience doing it; a bit mentally tiring in an odd way. There must be some special control-finding neurons that get exhausted in a way that they don't while simply orienteering that distance.) Or a series.
I assume that simply navigating to the club equipment locker during a training run doesn't count?
Hey All,
Also if you would like to come up with your own version based on the principals of this fundraiser that is fine. Examples could be for multiple athletes or for the team, or some other combination. Just let me know.
I am curious what you mean by the National Team...is it this team
http://www.us.orienteering.org/news/2015/us-teams/...
or this team
http://www.us.orienteering.org/us-teams/junior/arc...
trying to figure out who to "challenge"
@JimBaker: That brought back some fond (?) memories! :-)
I ran that 120-control race back in Oct 2004, I found my old map (without a GPS route :-() and put it on my DOMA server:
http://tmsw.no/qr/index.php?user=terjem&catego...I can absolutely relate to your description of mental fatigue in a race with this many controls, I have had that experience even on long forked night legs in Jukola with 30-40 controls, but on that world record race my main problem was pure and simple bonking, totally depleting my energy stores after just 2/3 of the controls.
Hey Carl,
National team includes the 22 athletes from your first link that were selected to the team. Please note Colin Beverage was just added in May so he may not be included. There should be 11 men and 11 women.
JWOC 12 athletes plus 4 alternates, 4 on the men's team are not on the National Team.
JWOC and Junior National Team combined is equal to 26 athletes.
Only 8 men are currently on the JNT list. Please have your admin add the others or email me...
Okay, I'll challenge Nakai Lake--$2 for every control up to $100 (50 controls)
Ok, I will match Carlch's challenge of $2 per control, but at a maximum of $200 (100 controls) to each of the following five juniors:
Colin Beverage
Brigitte Bordelon
Addison Bosley
Nakai Lake
Sholonda Snell
What are the juniors' goals?
Good question, Jordan. If they want to be world class, methinks they should be doing 100 controls a week, not 100 in a month. Curious to hear what Erin or some of the team members have to say about your question.
Hey Jordan,
Because we are in the US and its hard to get Out training my goal for the juniors is 1-2 times a week doing 2-4 exercises. Say each exercise has 10-15 controls looking at 40-60 controls for the week. If all the athletes on both JWOC and JNT do this its just over 1000 controls. Now there are some that can hit this mark, some that will certainly go over and some that due to crazy lives and availability of terrain and training may hit the mark.
Right now the JWOC team has a goal of 1000 controls and I think it would be cool if JNT and JWOC combined got to 1500.
Certainly setting a 50 marker control pick would help the cause: )
Great initiative. I can't participate this year because most of my money is being invested into orienteering anyway. Really glad to see people challenging the juniors. I am sure they will meet their goal.
Hey All,
Here is an update on who has been challenged and control count. Please Note I have not updated the control count since Sunday.
I'll challenge Izzy and Will to 50 controls each for a total of $200.00.
Train hard ;D

Latest Update!
Hey All,
Here is the latest update. No everyone's controls are there from the weekend but most should be there. We are also about 40% of the way in pledges to our goal of $12,000. So keeping getting the word out! Thanks
Latest update and numbers
WOW, Matej has been busy. Good for him!!!
Hey Austin! Fowler! Yeah, you, I'm talking to you! You have NO controls yet. You haven't been challenged. Well now you have. Get 100 controls by June 15 and I'll pledge $100. All or nothing. You do it or you don't.
I will make the same offer to the other five boys who as yet have NO controls and no challenges: George, Samuel, Michael B, Sebastian, and Gavin. All or nothing. 100 or bust. Can you dig it?
There are other athletes who still have NO challenges. C'mon folks, let's see some more challenges to support our team!
Matej has been busy
Yes, and
here you can see why...
At a pace of sometimes more than 45-50 controls per day it´s easy to see how he can reach those numbers.
I should have 104 controls, not 84.
hopefully this will get Sebastian and Gavin going! Thanks Mike! George, Sam, and Michael B, are on west point duties now so its not likely they will get orienteering.
@mikeminium - Austin ran most (if not all) of the events at the GOAT training camp while also helping with instruction, course reviews and pulling controls.
Between camp and the upcoming sprint camp, I suspect he will get the 100 controls.
I also challenge Gavin to $100 (50 controls)
Good to hear about Austin! And Brigitte is racking up the controls at TJOC!
Breaking News - Bordelon finished the prologue yesterday, 29 seconds behind Cody Klare. Today in an astounding sprint to the finish line, she won the chase, punching in just a couple seconds ahead of Cody.
By my count Austin has 56 controls - if pulling controls counts, I suspect he is already there.... Austin pulled a lot of controls last week. He was a huge help.
Hi All,
Here is the final control count after June 15. Juniors did a great job and surpassed expectations by a long shot!
To send in your donations please go to this link on the OUSA website
http://www.us.orienteering.org/support
and follow the instructions. Make sure to say that its for the "Junior Team fundraising challenge"!! Thanks to everyone who supports and supported the juniors!!! I think the work that they put in to meet this challenge will make a difference in the summer races and down the road.
Ahh! I forgot to log some of my controls!
The "final" count didn't list all of my challenges. But I'll include them I'm what I send in.
