I know Peter Gagarin is running. So is Andis Vitolins (after finishing 6th at the Billygoat yesterday!). Any other orienteers running Boston today?

Hans Fransson (Sudden) from Hamilton (DGL) is number 5148 and was at 3:01 pace at the 10km split.

PG has 26:27 split for first 5 km, nice and conservative, a lot is at stake :)

JanetT:
Yulia's wearing PG's bib?
Apr 20, 2015 3:50 PM #

Ari Ofsevit (CSU) running in bib 4315, currently on track to finish in just under 3h.

Peter through the half in 1:55:28!

Cristina:
Almost on pace for the 500NOK bonus, but it would take a negative split over the Newton Hills. Time bonuses aside it sure looks good so far, let's hope he feels good, too! (Or at least not horrible, it's too early for that.)
Apr 20, 2015 5:02 PM #
iansmith:
Ari is killing it; 2:50:25 through 40k. Andis is on pace for a 3:10 finish through 35 km.
Apr 20, 2015 5:07 PM #
Sandy:
Alan Young in under 3 hours.
Apr 20, 2015 5:09 PM #

Also, just as importantly, after 5.5 innings it's Boston 5 - Balitmore 1.

PG through 25 in 2:17:53! Currently on pace for 3:52.

Alan Young is a juggernaut; does anyone know what his PR is? Great showing from Andis, finishing in 3:12 the day after a Billygoat.
Apr 20, 2015 5:35 PM #
Bernard:
This may be his Alan's best run. He has been trying to break 3:00 for a few years but was always coming just over 3:00. 2:61, 2:62 :-).
Apr 20, 2015 5:49 PM #
bmay:
Top runner from Salmon Arm, Matt Mead, great run in 2:42:28.
Apr 20, 2015 5:50 PM #
iansmith:
Peter through 30km in 2:48! He's slowing a little, but still on pace for 3:56. Let's see if he can keep it together. From all the doom and gloom on his log - and given the tough winter, he's doing incredibly well and putting a fantastic effort.

Any info on the weather? Temp, wind, rain? Does it seem to be a factor? Winner's times look very good, so I suspect it is not too much of an issue. Just wondering, though.
Apr 20, 2015 6:25 PM #
BorisGr:
It was high 40s, but sounds like the winds were not as strong as had been predicted.
Apr 20, 2015 6:26 PM #

PG passed 35 km - 4 h reach seems to slip away.

MJC - in the mid 40ies. Light rain. Start: Calm, Finish: gusty wind.

Wellesley reports E at 18 mph, gusting to 28...

Congratulations, Peter! Mission accomplished. You still have it. Here's hoping you are still healthy and recover quickly. Thank you for creating a virtual cheering section that we were able to join, and for helping to promote and support the JWOC team. Time for a beer.

An inspirational run. Congratulations Peter.

Looks like Peter's run will earn donations of somewhere over $7000 for the Junior and Junior Ski-O Teams. The spreadsheet hasn't been updated for several days, and a number of other people joined the movement near the end.

Amusingly, the time bonus Peter chose for himself was 4:15.

I just paid up. One of the happier donations I've made.
Apr 20, 2015 7:43 PM #

Just posted this on his log.

Talked to Peter. He is ecstatic! Just really pleased and glad he was able to finish under 4:15. For the healthy bonus, he says there are degrees of suffering and while his quads hurt a fair amount, he doesn't think there is anything that will last very long. Yay!

Is there a way of donating on line via PayPal or something like that?
Apr 20, 2015 8:18 PM #

http://orienteeringusa.org/support

has options for donating online, or mailing a check to Robin. Just make a note as to which team(s) gets the funds.

Janet posted about donating on PG's log, under "Good idea" (near the end). She said you could pay via PayPal.

Thanks Janet; I should have known that or at least been able to figure it out! In any event, donation has been successfully and cheerfully made!

Thank you, Peter!
Congratulations all round.
Yulia is staying with us, and made it safely home. She was cold!

I'm impresssed, REALLY IMPRESSED.
1) that 70 -something PG was able to turn in a near 4 hour Boston Marathon time after spending much of the winter hobbled by injury. Good on you Peter!
2) That O-USA supporters are apparently willing to shell out $7000 plus as a result of a challenge by PG. It is an impressive tribute to PG and an impressive show of support for the junior team. It should make the team feel good to know that so many people are paying attention to them and are wanting to support their move to improve in the world rankings.
3) To show that Canadians care about and want to help our juniors in honour (not honor) of Peter's run I am going to donate $100 to the Canadian junior team. Any other Canadians want to join me? (Not you Hammer, you are probably shelling out enough already).
Apr 21, 2015 5:17 PM #
JanetT:
Robin (OUSA accounting director) asked me to post that she's paying attention to the donations, has set up a separate "campaign" accounting line to keep track of totals, and thanks everyone who includes a note saying the donation is for Peter's Marathon.

Perhaps one of the most spontaneous successful fund raisers for orienteering? I know the juniors will appreciate all the support!!

Yay for the healthy bonus!

GHOSLO:
I too am REALLY IMPRESSED. Well done Peter.
and great idea gordhun.
We will donate to the Canadian juniors too.
$20 / year for every year that I have been orienteering. It has been worth it.
Apr 23, 2015 6:05 PM #
Canadian:
Wow thanks Gordhun and GHOSLO! If I didn't need my funds for my own training and competition schedule I would definitely consider following suit.
Apr 24, 2015 2:24 PM #
bubo:
GHOSLO>> If you´ve been orienteering as long as I have (which sounds about right) that´s a substantial donation :)
If my maths are somewhat right I have just started my 50th year of orienteering...
And yes, it´s definitely been worth it!
Apr 24, 2015 5:18 PM #
GHOSLO:
Not quite so long but long enough that I am definitely past my the best before date.

But luckily, you haven't expired! :)
