Hello everyone. I am finishing up high school this year and am figuring out what to do with my future. I want to spend a year training and racing in Europe before heading off to university.

I have dual citizenship with Germany, so visas in Europe wont be an issue. Furthermore I am bilingually fluent in German and English and also took up mandarin while living in Taiwan. I am hoping to take advantage of that by living in German speaking countries with strong orienteering programs like Switzerland and Austria. Norway, Sweden, and Denmark are all also very appealing because of the strong orienteering cultures and sharing language roots with German. At this late stage in the game I'm really just looking for anything.

Most importantly I'm looking for a host family and host club that will take me, but I also would like to find a job or internship.

My career goal after university is to work as a computer programmer, so it would be cool to intern in Europe in that field. I have experience with Java, C, and Python, and have dabbled in areas like robotics, embedded systens, and website administration. In 9th grade i was in a robitics team where we built a robot that competed at the VEX world championships. I also have a project up on github that I've been working on.

I am also a PSIA (USA) level I certified downhill ski instructor with experience teaching young kids.

I would be delighted to hear from anyone about friends or friends of friends who might consider hosting me for a year, clubs that might assist a foreign orienteering junior train for a year, or companies that might consider hiring me as an intern, or even new suggestions and ideas.

Try hitting up Tori Borish. She spent some time in Austria and should still have some contacts.

I know some people at OCAD. If you write a small bio for me (also in German), I can send it to someone there. Plus, we can put something up on the Swiss Orienteering website.

It doesn't sound like what you're looking for exactly, but if you speak English, you've got a job in Spain.

Mike, I have a lead for you. I sent a copy of the above discussion to a Swiss orienteering family I know, and they're interested. They sent me an email that they'd like to have forwarded to you. I don't have your email address, so send me a memo at dennisw@dennisw.com and then I can forward their memo to you.
