Once in a while when orienteering you just pause for a moment as say to yourself that this is just too cool! You know what I mean if you are on this website. I can recall a few of those times along the way including Mt. Laurie in Alberta, finding the control in the crevice at the NAOC's in Ohio in 2004, Zermatt with blue skies (an extended tres coole), etc

Today I was scouting out the famous Rocks in N.B and was finalizing arrangements to have an extra sprint event during our Canadian Orienteering Championships 2008 (though it will not be the actual championship event). This will take place on the ocean floor. Yes, you read correctly! The tides are over 40 feet high and the map will only be above water for a portion of the day. I was feeling a bit disappointed that we could not offer a major extension to the Maple Grove map in Fundy Park for the longer events next year. Now I have absolutely no guilt saying this is not to be missed. Check out the scenery at www.thehopewellrocks.ca/english/panorama.htm to see for your self. If you are even contemplating coming please indicate so on the event that is posted on this website.

Thanks, David Ross meet director

David, I don't see it on the AP events listing. When in 2008 is it?

August 21-24th, 2008....

Save those dates to:

- experience some of the famous Maritime hospitality,
- feast on the best (and freshest) lobsters and scallops bar none,
- take the chance to experience some unique orienteering opportunities (when else will you get the chance to run a sprint race on the ocean floor???), and
- challenge yourself on some of the terrain that has propelled Fundy Falcons runners to some 25+ WOC teams and countless World Cup events.

Canadian Champs 2008

I'm not quite sure what David means by his description of the terrain in the event listing. Having run on that map in 2000, I can say it certainly features a full scope of orienteering challenges. There are some areas of intricate vegetation changes, but much of the map is highly-runnable mature hardwood, with sections of intricate rock detail. The full map covers a hillside and encompasses a golf course, three campgrounds, and the park's Welcome Center. Yes, there will be climb. And if you want to win, you will have to be fast in the runnable areas, strong on the hills, and steady in the areas of rich technical detail.

Wow, I am looking forward to a sprint on the Hopewell Rocks map. I think a prime control would be on top of one the the "Flower pots" a short hop, or a long climb. separate the men from the boys.

This additional series of events will be in the Barebones style with a sprint, middle and long distance events held in Rockwood Park, Saint John, N.B. The fact that the Fundy tide flows in a wave may give some new urgency to the term 'Sprint O'. David, at the Hopewell event could I have an early start time, please?

How are you going to do control pickup, or are you just going to wait until the next low tide?

Are SI boxes that waterproof??

Gord - for your early start, you have to provide your own snorkeling gear. I could see some really fast splits on those first couple easterly legs - but don't float off the map.

No they'll have to do control pickup right after the race. The tides are super strong and would sweep the controls away.

It's going to be one hell of a race against the clock. Don't be late for your start :)

The area is appropriately named "Hope well"

Is there no longer a sprint-O plan for the university campus in Moncton?
