I was just checking MInnas technique and I was simple trying to see how she does the actual navigation work. Minna had one kind of control spiking training - she wasn't supposed to look at the map at all during last 100 meter before each control, she was supposed to memorize the area and make a plan how to spike it securely without having to look at map. Possibly missing controls made it challenging enough.

Anyway - what's wrong or crazy with it? I didn't have gps either and I had O shoes without metal studs. I guess I was exceptionally AOWN :)

Seriously, I don't think it is bad idea sometimes run in forest without map or compass. I used to do it quite a lot ten years ago when I was strudying in Lappeenranta. I started run from home, usually about west trough forests, if I hit a lake I started runing around it, after one hour or 1,5 hours I turned back and tried to find home. You get nice terrain runing training, also you can focus your forest running strides/pace/economy and learn techniques how to keep straight line without having to look at map or compass too often or notice if you have turned left / right). You usually don't focus on these things when you do normal O training with map. I haven't done these for a while, actully it would be fun to do it again now with gps. Back then I sometimes didn't have no idea where I had been.

I have to admit sometimes my 2 hour run turned to 4 hout run - or 3 hour run + 2 hour walk. But it was just good for me...
