The Junior Team Executive Steering Committee is Excited to Announce the formation of a Northeast Regional Junior Orienteering Team. The team will be lead by expert coach Becky Carlyle. Becky has a vast amount of experience competing at the highest level and coaching Juniors from beginners to elite level athletes in the British orienteering system. Since coming to the US Becky has provided coaching services at Junior training camps and to individual athletes. We are excited to have such an excellent coach to kick off the first regional team!

Becky will be leading an informational session about the Regional Team program and specifically reaching out and talking to Junior’s and Parents in the Northeast Region interested in being on the team. The information session will happen at the Hudson Valley Orienteering Club's National Meet this Saturday October 25. The North East Region includes (NY, NJ, VT, NH, ME, MASS, RI, CONN) The information Session will start at 3:00pm in conjunction with the after race picnic. The brief info session will be followed by a meet and greet session with Becky. All junior and parents in the north east region are welcome.

If you can’t make it to this session Becky and Junior National Coach Erin Schirm will be leading a joint info session at the New England Orienteering Clubs National Meet on Saturday November 8th, more info and specifics to come.

The Junior Program Coordinator Erin Schirm will be reaching out to clubs in the Northeast Region about working collaboratively with the regional Team program to further enhance junior development. If this is something your club is interested in and wants to get the ball rolling please contact Erin Schirm at erinschirm@gmail.com. If you can think of any kids and families interested in this opportunity please pass the message along.

This is the first of what we hope will be many regional teams so stay tune for developments in your region. If you are interested in working on this project please contact Erin. Thanks to all the people who are working on the Junior Development effort and putting forth their time to make it happen, we hope to see many of you at the info sessions.

Sincerely,

Junior Team Executive Steering Committee.

A really great idea and I hope other regions are established soon. And thanks to Becky for taking on the regional coach position.

When you get around to establishing a Regional Team in the southeast I have some candidates to nominate. There are some cadets running very fast times in the Florida JROTC competitions. Find great runners and help them become great orienteers: that's the formula!

The US is a big country, hard to cover everyone and plus juniors need different coaching at different stages, more coordinated coaches the better.

Gord has that formula ever actually been tried?

The "secret" formula to success:
Find someone truly interested in orienteering in the first place and help them become great orienteers...

PS. It´s OK if they are great runners, of course, but if they´re not interested enough to dedicate all/most of their training to orienteering the chance of success is small.

Nev - Scott Fraser is your starter for 1. Everyone else in the current GBR team I have known as an orienteer since childhood.

I'm not sure if that proves or disproves anything!

This regional networking is a great plan! We hope that Orienteering USA has enough resources to expand this plan to all regions. The JTESC, with the extra hard work of Erin, is making the idea become a reality. All those involved should be thanked for their hard work. Juniors are the future of our sport!
