Orienteering (course setting) 3:52:58 ***
Vetting my control locations for the Rosaryville meet on Nov 2nd. The park was open but the road was blocked off after the first parking lot, which wasn't even on my map. So I had some hiking just to get to the area my controls were in.
The first hour was not fun. The woods where I started are green (even the white woods aren't very nice), the map is a bit sketchy (could have been me...) and a lot of the features on the map were pretty small. I did a lot of walking, and at one point figured out that I was averaging 15 min per control. At that rate, it would take me about 7 hours to finish! (according to my rough math, which I haven't thought through since I determined that). But I knew things would speed up once I got to the nicer terrain closer to the start/finish. As I went along early on, hating the woods, I decided I'll probably shorten the Blue (the meet is the day after the Susquehanna Stumble, so some crazy people might be doing both & want something shorter), maybe the Red, and not worry so much about doglegs & having lots of route choices. Instead, I will just try to make the courses fun. Always a good goal.
Lots of spider webs, plenty of thorns, and it was hot. At times I would have prefered being at work, but overall it was okay. Not looking forward to putting out the controls, as I'll more than likely have to park in the same place, but this time I'll be lugging around a bunch more stuff. Well, I'll worry about that later. :-)

Orienteering race 1:48:59 [3]*** 8 km (13:37 / km)

QOC Blue course at Pohick Bay. Nadim set the courses but I was barely aware of him doing it. So I had no idea where the course went. But, it being Pohick, it was hard to be much different than normal. It did seem like I ran on a trail or two I hadn't been on before. Maybe that was just my mind getting older & more forgetful, though.
Slow today, partly because it was warm, partly because it was hilly, partly because I forgot my ankle brace & was being cautious, partly because I was mentally tired, especially the last several controls when we got into the eastern part of the map that I don't like much. Missed #7 a bit, overshot; climbed too early on #9; a bit to the left on #11 (the green woods were hard to get through); otherwise, pretty clean. Only beat Nadim on one split. The white woods were beautiful. The green is mostly mountain laurel so not too bad.
It was fun to see Yulia Hanson, visiting from Chicago with her new (9 mos) baby; she had never met Max & was very happy to, and kept trying to speak Russian to him. He gave her weird looks, as he didn't understand any. I hope he has an interest in learning it later.

Note
(rest day)
I took Max & our friend Arina (two months younger than Max, adopted from Petrozavodsk a few weeks earlier) to play mini golf, in which I suspended all normal mini golf rules. Then we went to McDonalds for Happy Meals & some McDonald's Play Place activity. Then I called Arina's mom to say I was bringing her home, & she suggested we meet at the Chevy Chase firehouse where they were having an open house, complete with an inflated firetruck/slide, fire chief hats, balloons, a magician & clown, etc. The kids loved it but by that time were starting to get tired & there was some crankiness at the very end. All in all, a very nice outing ... until we were leaving, and I backed the van into an old couple's car :-(. Dented the wheel well of the driver's side wheel; not too bad & still driveable, but of course I felt awful. The woman took a look and seemed pretty unconcerned, saying a car is just a mode of transportation, but we'll see. When we got home I noticed we have some paint scrapes on our bumper. Bummer.
Meanwhile, Nadim was working on emptying our newly delivered storage units. Wow, we have a lot of stuff. Time to get rid of the junk.
Don't think I'll get a workout in today. Working on setting the Rosaryville meet & when Max wakes up from his nap, we'll probably go buy another new hot water heater. Doesn't get any better than that.

Thursday Oct 9

Cross training (recumbent exercise bike) 47:00 [2]
In the gym, at lunch. Feeling a bit lazy, I decided to skip the weights.
Trail 43:54
Warm (70+) & humid today, and I had about an hour to kill while Max was in gym class. I worked an hour of CT today, so I went directly to pick up Max & thus wasn't dressed to run -- had to spend a few minutes changing after Max was in class. I didn't want to do a long run, anyway, just something easy & fun. I stayed on the north side of the road, in the campground section of Cabin John Park. Took the streamside trail until it started to disintegrate into the woods, then back & through the campground, and into some very open woods in a reentrant. As always, I thought about mapping the area and hosting a meet, perhaps with a camping option afterwards. Might not happen next summer, but maybe 2010 . . .
Ankle was pretty achy, and legs, especially at first, were just lacking any zip. But there was a decent hill getting into the campground, and I felt strong on that one, as well as the uphill road back to the parking lot. Happy about that.

Note
(rest day)
I was going to run after work on the towpath (lunchtime was my monthly quilting meeting ... getting excited about next month's quilt retreat!), but it was overcast & chilly and my ankle hurt. So I bagged it. I had to finish the laundry & set the Boy Scout Super Advanced Course so I justified my rest day by getting stuff done. :-)

Got a bee sting, as many people did, during the Highlander. Mine is on my left butt cheek, near the top of my leg. I was just minding my own business, running down the big trail between 2 & 3, when I felt the sting. I felt it the rest of the run, every time I strode out. Since then, it's been itchy & swollen. A bit better today but it still itches. I'm glad I only got one sting!

Cross training (recumbent exercise bike) 47:00 [2]
I really wanted to just stay at my desk and rest. But I figured I better do something to get my muscles moving a little. Nice & easy, felt good.

Arms, wrists, shoulders.
