Orienteer (RItter arm- Orange fun) 1:05:00 [3] 6.0 km (10:50 / km)
shoes: Icebug Spirit-L olx

Thank you thank you Mike and Hulia!!!!!

Mike/Julia set up an orange course at the AR tune-up, to be nice to the "orienteer only" crowd (ok, not a crowd), and maybe to entice us to pick up controls. Double bonus, triple bonus counting the food.
I enjoyed the run, but either mind was groggy or I didn't respect the orange enough, 'cause I made an 180 error (wrong way coming out of control onto trail) and another very poor bearing error. Wasn't running clean. Ah well. I should do more oranges.
Saw Mike after his run; impressively running alone on an AR after a full two or so orienteering events prior to this. Humbled he says, but I'm afraid it maybe be the tip of the humble iceberg. ...which made me just look up "humble pie". Do you know what that is? It's pie made out of heart, entrails, etc. of a deer. Yuck. I don't want to eat humble pie.

Hike (Control Pickup) 45:00 [3]

From the aerial photograph side, six controls. All straightforward, walked most of it because I was lazy, and I forgot to bring my control bag w me. Fun, peaceful. Nice park.

Orienteer (ASP ) 2:00:00 [2]

I had an email from Paul yesterday, "did you ever pick up the remaining controls (flagging tape) from Darryn's 50th?". Oops. Paul and his friend had picked up a bunch over the week immediately following the event and I had promised to do whatever was left. And then forgot. Sry. =/
But I got them today. Slow day, for numerous reasons and so I planned for walking and took both dogs. Kind of a dreary day and I didn't see anyone else except driving through the park nice and warm and dry in their cars.

Bike (MB Carver Lake) 40:00 [3] 6.0 mi (6:40 / mi)

Salem Hills/Carver Lake Meetup
w Pete and Clark, and Tim and Timmer

I only did 1 full loop and then the North loop. I was quite a ways behind everyone else, like a six year old trying to be part off the 10 year olds' gang (or, like a F50 trying to keep up with M<50s..... but I like the first analogy better). Perfect cool riding weather. A small social beer afterwards in the parking lot.
Clark and Pete were still looping around when I left.

MB etiquette question: how wrong is it to ride in the opposite direction on a single track when the park is nearly empty? Tim and Timmer (both long time riders) seemed to feel it was no problem, but we kept running into a guy going the right way who would say. 'You're going the wrong way" each time. Which we were.

Also... it it just me, or do there seem to be a lot of phantom ticks this year? I keep feeling them on me... but nothing.

Orienteer (Chattahooche Long) 1:35:00 [3] 7.8 km (12:11 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Roclite™ 268

I decided to rerun the Long course and try out some different route choices (in Atlanta, had hours to spare before my plane was going to take off).

After event a couple of weeks ago, expresso had questioned a number of my choices and pointed out potentially better routes on a few. On some of the others, I just ran different to switch things up. Definitely did not feel like racing, but I was hoping I could just run cleaner and make better choices.

So, on 1, rather than taking pretty much the very safe road trail the whole way, I decided to take use the marsh as a handrail and avoid all the hills and run more direct. It worked out really well. I wasn't paying close enough attention to my map on the initial trail section and was confused when I hit a "creek" but the trail went the wrong way. Wrong creek. Time was 1:20 longer though. =(
Still, I liked that route better. Didn't tire me out. Even though the day was hot. Maybe if I had run it confidently on race day it would have been a good choice.
2. -:50Kind of same route as last time, not many other choices, still bungled it, but saved 50 seconds on this leg.
3. +20 sec.. I ran into a tree and bruised my forehead, had blood streaming down. Still bleeding when I got to airport (after cleaning it) and had people asking "are you okay"? I wonder if I'm in an abusive relationship with this sport. I keep making excuses for it.
4. +13 Hard to find the pit, especially so without the flag. Stopped a few times to wipe of the blood.
5. +1:25 I went through the marsh and it slowed me down, although I spiked it. Original route wins but next time I'll try another way.
6. + 1:35 Stayed away from high route to campground.
7. -:50 since i wasn't distracted by spectator control
8. -:35 Should have been a lot more, since I messed this one up two weeks ago and ran around in circles. Must have been fast circles. This time, used the long hill as handrail. Worked great.
9. +3:00 and change, twisted an ankle, came out in the wrong spot, took some time wondering where the big stream reentrant was. Then, bashed my shin (was in shorts, no gaiters) and rolled on the ground for a while. Another big bloody broooze. (I kind of like them though).
I also thought.... if I get seriously hurt, I can just post on attackpoint that I'm between 9 and 10 since I had my phone. But, it felt fine after 30 seconds or so.
10. -1:30 or so, messed this one up less than last time. Still a miss
11. -:45 Using route suggested by expresso (why didn't you just run to the trail? ) and I even ran much slower this time and saved a good bit. Much better.
12 -.05 Just wasn't as tired so it was easier to keep moving
13 -:10 Easy control, just not tired again i think
F +15. just jogged it in
Total: about six minutes over. Very fun. Easier for sure once you've already done it once! Weirdly, my gps distance was less than the course distance.

Then I had to rush to the airport, because i remembered what a pain in the neck that airport is!

The Walk that Started Out as a Run

I've been not feeling like running lately, but I thought that Alice and I could take a pokey pokey run down to St. Mary's Point for a little swim (for her).
We made it as far as the Bolles Mill Historical marker on 95 ..... no mill, just a marker. And I thought...maybe we can find the remains of the mill. So we explored down in the large river-bottoms by the St. Croix river for a bit, ambling around the swampy areas, big maple trees overhead on fallen down, over the creek. Peaceful. By the time I got back to the bike trail (no mill), I just didn't feel like going to St. Mary's Point anymore so we headed back. Mostly jog, but also some fun little obedience work for Alice. She doesn't really like heeling so much.... but if I add in quick stops, quick starts, spins, go around objects, switch directions... then it becomes a game and we both enjoy. And then by the time we started jogging again, I finallly felt up to it. But walked up the driveway so maybe not all that much.
