UsynligO course on Stafford Meadows map (Thanks, Greg) - on the ridge just north of Montage Mountain Ski Area. Adv2 course, 3.8km straight line. Lots of blueberry and bare rock (and snakes when it’s warmer - didn’t see any today). Occasional scratchy stuff, mostly in wetter areas (which weren’t very wet today). Reasonably physical with blueberry bashing and rock hopping.

Errors on two legs, one medium (control 8) and one small (11), both due to confusion from rock in the terrain that wasn’t on the map. Was way short on 8 - kept better track of distance on all the other legs. Temperature about 50F, mostly sunny.

Adv1 course at Stafford Meadows, 3.3km. Shared the final 2 legs with the Adv2 course but otherwise was in a different area. Lost time on control 9, mostly figuring out which of several pieces of rock in the terrain was the one shown on the map. Vegetation on the first few legs of this course seemed to be the thickest of the areas I visited today.

UsynligO course on Stony Run, a KP map by Greg A of a piece of State Forest north of Stroudsburg. I really enjoyed orienteering here. The area is predominantly hardwood forest and has excellent visibility (100m+). There are lots of features (cliffs, boulders, vegetation, stone wall remnants, trails, a few marshes and good contour detail). There are areas of blueberry and ferns as well as rocky ground, so the going can be slow at times. Unfortunately, this particular piece of SF is only about 1.5 km^2, so there’s nothing else to be added. The fact that the leaves were in their full Fall splendor made it that much better.

Navigated well. Off left on two bearing legs, but Janet pointed out to me afterwards that magnetic north probably wasn’t parallel to the paper edge, as I had assumed. Used a hint at 10 to figure things out when I was looking for a cliff and seeing several more cliffs in the terrain than were on the map.

Plainfield Township Recreation Trail, north from parking at Knitter’s Hill Rd. Mostly paved or gravel rail trail, except at the northern end where there is (was?) a slate quarry and the trail follows old road tracks. Also explored a few side trails at the northern end. Trail is almost entirely in the woods. Upper 50s and sunny, a very fine Fall day.

Eales Preserve at Moosic Mountain, near Scranton. A hike on a fine Fall day (sunny and upper 60s) with lots of color. This place is great - 2000+ acres preserving heath barrens. Open areas with lots of scrub oak, aspen and blueberry interspersed with hardwood forest (oak, maple, sassafras, etc.). Rocky underfoot with lots of boulders strewn about, most of it conglomerate. Worth another visit.

Hickory Run SP. Rerun of the Blue Middle Distance course from the 2008 Team Trials (I first ran it in August of this year, not in 2008). No flags or streamers, just UsynligO. 4.8k straight line. Much better run this time with 3 small misses (compared with 3 big misses last time, all on different controls). About 30 minutes faster today. Even as a rerun, this was still pretty challenging since the in-your-face beech saplings still have green leaves on them so visibility is limited. Bobbled 5 a little bit and then the tune didn’t play the first time I was at the feature (or close enough that I would’ve seen a flag). Off on 6 but relocated reading features. Great weather - 60s and sunny.

On the D & L Trail in Lehigh Gorge SP starting (and finishing) at the Tannery parking area. Went south to a bit beyond where Mud Run empties into the Lehigh. Checked out remnants of a couple of impressive locks (28’ lift, all stonework with no mortar, designed to fill or empty in < 3 minutes, built ~1840). Gorgeous day - sunny, low 60s and lots of Fall color.

Red course at Hibernia County Park. 6.9k, 156m climb. Green and scratchy, often with low visibility. Navigation was OK but I made several route choices which didn’t minimize the time spent in crappy woods, costing time. AP has me with about 5 minutes of total time lost, spread over 6 legs. Two controls were hung in a newly logged area where the map did not match the reality. No big problems there, but why put controls there? Nice day - low 60s and sunny.

UsynligO course on Shickshinny map - Adv2, 5.7k, 1:10000, 5m contours. I really like this area with very good visibility and some fun (and different) technical areas. This is my third time on the map and I’ve mostly figured out how to read it (i.e. what’s mapped or not and what to expect to see - like big cliffs on the map which are invisible until you’re very close because they’re down in big holes).

Navigated well with mistakes on only 2 controls (3 and 7). Lost time on a few controls figuring out which nearby feature might be the one actually on the map and circled, but usually the tune would play and I’d move on (7, 11, 12 and 16).

And the weather was great - 60s and mostly sunny.

Thanks to Greg A for the map and Sandy F for designing the courses.

Bonus course at Shickshinny, a 1.7k control pick in a technical and hilly area. Map at 1:7500.

Fun and physical course (~85m climb in 1.7k). One ridge over on control 4 and used a UsynligO hint to figure it out. Otherwise hit the others OK. The reentrant feature at 2 is more an elongated depression, so that was a little tricky. 1:5000 would’ve been nice.
