Warming up. Ouchie...

Orienteering 38:13 [2] 5.15 km (7:25 / km) +202m 6:12 / km

Running some of the long distance race this morning. My knee was very painful warming up and I have to accept now that I need to let it recover. Did a few controls, it was raining and very cold, so not that much fun, but the forest was nice.

My kids did awesome today though! Pascal Buchs, who is only 15 and running his 3rd race in H16, won today, with the two others in H16 placing 10th and 16th out of 38. In D20, Anaïs was 4th, in D18 Kerria was 3rd, in D16 Sophie was 5th :-) Happy coach!

running warm up/down 31:55 [2] 3.6 km (8:52 / km) +5m 8:48 / km

Warm-up for the sprint race today in Kleinadelfingen. I wanted to race well today and felt my knee quiet a lot while warming up, so it took some discipline to control my thoughts and focus on what I wanted to do during the sprint. I managed to take my focus away from the knee.

Orienteering race 16:21 [5] 3.43 km (4:46 / km)

Sprint race.

Interesting course! At first it was quiet easy with some route choices. It was only difficult to decide what was better, but I think I managed all the routes well. I am not quiet fast enough yet and lost most of my time here. After about 1/2 of the course it started to get tricky with lots of small controls in an old-town twisty fashioned way. You always had to check if you could get through on a certain route, because there were lots of impassable features. I got myself through the tricky stuff ok, although I had trouble keeping track of where I was on the map, for instance to number 10, I didn't see the control right away and when I looked at my map I couldn't find 10 on the map for a long time. This is frustrating, because I just needed to check a detail, but my eye kept going to 13. At the very end of the course to number 18, I made a 30 second mistake. I passed my control without seeing it and went to another control. Punched it, but realized while leaving that it didn't make sense, then realized I wasn't at my control. I rarely go to wrong controls, let alone punch them... lost many places on that control.

Overall, I was happy with the sprint. My time, 3:31 behind Helena Jansson was good. It looks like Mina Kauppi made some mistakes, she was just ahead of me and writes something on her webpage that she got lost.

Orienteering 43:36 [2] 4.14 km (10:32 / km) +119m 9:13 / km

O-training in Serroue on a circular map with controls (because the Norwegian did this training this week and Baptiste left the controls out for us, yeah!). I used this exercise to work on my compass bearings and tried to go straight and rely mostly on my compass to see if I come out where I am supposed to. I failed several times, but was right on others times. Of course the better method is to adjust your bearing based on features you see, if you are off a bit. I think compass running is something I should work on. I have potential for improvement ;-)

running 55:45 8.14 km (6:51 / km) +125m 6:22 / km

Intervals with my juniors, Helen Palmer, Baptiste, Marc and Christoph Staufer. Great group!

The juniors and I did 2x 1km and 6 x 200m. The kilometers were at threshold pace and the 200m at a interval pace. We looked at a sprint map, studying 3 cotrolls at a time during the 200m jog and visualized those controls while running the 200m fast. It was hard to concentrate on what I had memorized and run fast. On the 2nd 200m I ran about 5 seconds too slow, because I was thinking so much about where I was going through on the map. It took a mix of thinking about both. Interesting.

Orienteering race 57:30 [5] 6.6 km (8:43 / km) +280m 7:11 / km

Unfortunate race! I had a bad beginning, feeling nervous and not concentrating on the real task at hand, therefore making a mistake to number 3, losing 2 minutes. After that it would have been ok, except I got a stick in my eye on the way to 5 and could not read the map or see the terrain anymore. Both eyes watering like mad. I ended up messing up my route to 5 by leaving the trail too early and got very lost, never really being able to read where the control was supposed to be. Lost 5 minutes to this control. The eye got better, but I still couldn't read details and lost another 2 minutes to 9. Oh man... bad day.
